Akron gets WVU bball transfer
6'11" freshman, should be able to play immediately.

Word is the reason for transfer is to be closer to his father, who is blind.

Nice pickup, especially when he can play immediately. They really should have redshirted him if there where 24 games left.

And he had full sight when the kid signed with WVU? These transfers playing right away sure is getting out of hand.

I'm sure his theft arrest this spring had nothing to do with his departure.

Indeed good pickup.

Think that he was granted a redshirt + immediate eligiblity.

See the r-Fr in his bio below.

RE: Akron gets WVU bball transfer
That WVU link pertains to his time at WVU and he will get that last season if eligibility back, that has zero to do with him being instantly eligible at Akron. He very well may be, but that is unknown at this point.

Here is an article about him and raises the immediate eligibility question.

I'll do some searching for a more definitive answer...

Correct.

The article uses the term 'hardship waiver' which is extremely confusing.

To me a 'hardship waiver' would be the right to transfer without a sitout year, not a medical redshirt.

"Medical redshirt' is a term which speaks for itself.

"Hardship waiver' is completely ambiguous and doesn't have a defined meaning (at least to me).

Other than West Virginia, all the rest of his offers were mid-majors.

Why? People should have the freedom to choose what to do with their lives.

Certainly do, but sit the season out like most others have to. NCAA is getting too lax onwhich kids get to play right away and who doesn't.

Or the NCAA is wisely loosing the reins on players and their reasonable right to move.

I favor the NCAA restrictions on transfers within D-I but with reasonable exceptions.

I'd guess the number of students or student/athletes with significant family issues be it health, financial, etc. is probably a lot higher than most would guess.

As a FWIW, my mother died between the date I completed my undergraduate studies and my commencement. My father died while I was working on my graduate thesis.

RE: Akron gets WVU bball transfer
It constantly tries to police the schools and kids from any professionalism yet this creates a free agency air about it.

These same exact issues were most likely there when this young man chose WVU over all of those other schools so I don't see the justification. A hardship to get closer to home to be near or even aid in something that occurs between signing an LOI and transferring is legit IMO; a pre-existing condition is not. Or as in the case of Humpty a transfer to a school much further from home is certainly not on that level either.

Surprised Akron would want him to play this season. Hard to believe he'll get many minutes when he's sharing time with Zeke.

Zeke was the only true center on the roster. Now we have depth.

It also gives us options when playing another team with lots of height. You might see some two-center sets from Akron this year.

RE: Akron gets WVU bball transfer
The article says he played in seven games for WVU last year, yet still has 4 years of eligibility. Did he get injured and was granted an extra year?

Elsewhere, someone posted all of his offers aside from WVU were from "mid-majors". Wonder which ones? The articles says he was scraping the bottom of the recruitment barrel, with offers from such teams such as Ohio St, Cincinnati, and Virginia Tech.
