Brace yourselves for Robert's disparaging comment about South Carolina.

I think NC or SC, maybe Georgia would be the best places in the country for business, cost of living, and quality of living for anyone who likes outdoors.

Otherwise, I'd say TX, KS and Nebraska would be some of the best places I've visited for quality of life... as an outdoorsman. CO would be nice, if the Libs hadn't taken it over already.

Why would I bother to disparage SC? Everybody knows it is already screwed up with all the Christian Taliban there. No need to dwell on how backwards they are.

Right on cue.

Sadly, every state can't be the Utopia that is Illinois.

Never said Illinois was a utopia. It has it's share of problems like any other state. For instance downstate Illinois is Republican and quite southern in their ways of life and views. 05-stirthepot

I'm sure it's lovely. So are lots of places that Robert manages to mindlessly insult frequently.

Not really. I prefer to not get shot, so I avoid the city as much as possible.

I figure it's like every other big city. It's awesome if you know which neighborhoods to steer clear of after dark, and which ones to steer clear of period.

This. Orlando had a few years where it had a really bad murder rate (like a 2-3 year spurt out of nowhere) and people were freaking out about it. Then the OPD came out with the actual statistics and something like 97% of murders were either committed within a 2 mile radius of two specific areas, or were drug related (deals gone bad/robbing drug dealers/etc).

Chicago is another kind of city. It's just a special place. Great food and a great time. The people there are special too. Just go. It's not a New York rude. It's attitude with pizazz mixed with an innate humor. That's the best way I can describe it. They know they are in a special place and want to share it but they want you to know it's all theirs. We walked into a downtown jazz festival one weekend in Millennium Park. I'm telling you. Just a great great time. River tours. The bums even give you a little theatre. I'm not kidding. This one guy went into a bit about my lady..... how about two pence for a warm cup of soup...... The English accent.. the whole bit.

My impression of Chicago is that downtown is great, but the suburbs are the absolute pits. Worked for a company with HQ in Schaumburg, and I hated going to corporate for meetings. Always liked the comment by one guy out of our Boston office, "The first time I went there, when I landed at O'Hare I thought, my God, I've landed on the moon."

But downtown is fun. Lots going on. It feels pretty safe. Not somewhere I would choose to live, but not a bad place to visit.

Downtown and the north side are fantastic. Suburbs aren't bad either, depending on which ones. Most of the northwest and far west suburbs are very nice. The North Shore area which are the suburbs directly north are very nice as well, and where most Chicago athletes live. The south and southwest suburbs you could call the pits though.

I don't know what the suburbs are like in your area Owl. North Chicago is anything but the pits. Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park? Fugghhedabout it.

Jimmy Croce said the southside was "the baddest part of town".

I would venture to say the west side is worse.
