This thread made me laugh. I've noticed in three states you have basically the same situation: a small market FCS team with good football tradition getting passed over by another in-state start up team from a large market. In VA ODU & JMU, in NC AppSt & UNCC and in GA GSU & GSU

I hope the three do move up to FBS soon b/c there's the makings of some good in-state rivalries.

Georgia State: If you want to shut Southern up I think you're going to have to schedule them and beat them, it's the only way. We didn't exactly shut the Dukies up but did knock them down a few pegs. There's really no better comeback in sports trash talk than SCOREBOARD!

State has no reason to travel to Statesboro, FBS schools should never play on the road at FCS schools and Southern would view playing a one off at State as an indignity.

There is a practicality issue now. 8 conference games leaves 4 OOC games per year. No way an FBS signs a series with an FCS. GS isnt taking a one off. So its a status quo until GS moves up. Frankly most of us are more bummed about not having South Alabama this year.

Our AD isn't the best PR person. Most likely we had a full schedule, and at the time State was still FCS. As a start up FCS program, Southern wasn't going to travel to their house for a one and done which were the only terms their AD would agree to. Apparently a home and home was out of the question.

But as others have stated, now that State has moved up, there is no way in heck they would schedule us. Same reason why no FBS teams in the bottom 50 would schedule us. Not worth the risk in losing to an FCS team. The game will only happen after Southern moves up, and could take another 5 years after that for scheduling reasons.

I wouldn't expect them to travel to the boro now that they are FBS. I don't even think they would want to do a one off. We would take them to the wood shed if we played within the next 5 years. After they have more time to get their program off the ground, they MIGHT schedule us as a FCS team, but like I said, I don't see us playing until Southern is FBS.

Luckily the students are voting on a fee increase that will close the $4.4m gap quiet a bit. Hopefully the alumni can step up and get us where we need to be so we're attractive enough for an offer.

I think it's safe to say the next 5 years will determine the course of action for the next 30 at Southern.

Good luck. For USA it was a case of just waiting for the right time which was a luxury afforded by already existing in an FBS conference.
