Big 12 GOR extended (link)
Per Commissioner Bowlsby:

Gazette-Mail - Please clear up the issue concerning schools granting media rights to the league. Schools agreed to grant the rights for a minimum of six years, but then word came that was extended to 13 years. Has that agreement been signed?

Bowlsby - It has been extended to 13 years and it has been signed.

Also enjoyed this nugget from Bowlsby:

Oliver Luck is going to provide tremendous leadership [for WVU] and he'll be a part of the league's senior management team. He's already had an impact.

It will be interesting to know just how much WVU garners from this deal say after 4 or 5 years of playing in a 10 team league. The travel expense of all their teams is going to be costly amongst the Big12 with Iowa State a thousand miles away being their closes competitor amongst the conference. I will bet good money that once WVU starts earning their full shares they will more than likely only be earning at best ACC money or less after paying all their travel expenses being on the island they chose to be on.

Yeah travel costs will increase but WVU will be playing in a league that is second only to the SEC in terms of football strength. I am certain that any WVU official or fan would gladly trade increased travel costs for the opportunity to play football at the highest level compared to remaining in a watered down and largely irrelevant Big East.

Ok, so you are saying that the Big 12 gets 20 and ACC 16- that the travel costs are going to be more than 4 million dollars??? Really? And, that's before any bowls money or whatever.

He also addresses the whole expansion possibility.

Quote: Gazette-Mail - What can you tell us about possible expansion?

Bowlsby - For every conference out there, you're having ongoing discussions about expansion, whether anything happens or not. With all that's gone on, you have to. Everyone will keep it in the front of their minds.

Gazette-Mail - Are there any active negotiations with any other schools concerning Big 12 membership?

Bowlsby - No.

Gazette-Mail - What's your view on membership? Is the current 10-school model all right or should there be more?

Bowlsby - I don't think there's anything at all wrong with 10. Every league has to make its own decision based on membership. I think you only consider adding schools that make a substantial impact.

I think it ought to be a very difficult fraternity to get into.

I agree...travel costs/smagel costs......Whats going to be made in tv revenue soon, coupled with the toilet swirling conference we are left in makes it an easy decision regarding non rev sports travel costs.

Travel isn't so costly, if you don't stay at the most expensive hotels, and you cook your own meals...

Its a very good fit for wvu (travel aside), imo.
They deserved to find a good landing spot.
Basically single handedly got the BE 8 more years of bcs games.

Bit, I don't think you'll see Huggins and Holgorsen staying at Super 8 and making PBJ sandwiches in their motel rooms. 03-lmfao

Not that it matters, the TV money is more than enough to cover any increase in travel costs.

They do, but unless your teams do things much differently than ours, they're not pinching pennies on where they stay or how they get there.

Not sure who paid for it, but did you see their hotel for the Orange Bowl? Not sure what was in the water, but it worked.

It is true. It was WVU's SugarBowl win in a tacit home game against Georgia that gave the Big East some FB cred. Up to that point, nobody had won anything to speak of. The next season, Louisville helped solidify it with their ORANGE bowl victory, but a win over the SEC champ is what bought us the time to solidify it.

I will certainly give WVU credit and probably started it...I cheering like crazy for them in that Georgia game...but I can't say that they single handlely saved the conference.

I can agree with that. But WVU's BCS Bowl victories had a lot to do with the Big East retaining their BCS autobid after the first eval period. Without those the BE would have become MWC redux.

Very true...most in "The Ville" have no real problem with WVU...the Eers didn't so much "save the conference" @ that time but stopped the bleeding...with their move to the Big XII they did what was best for them and I wish them nothing but success in the Big XII.
