With its multimillion-dollar deficit mounting and no deep-pocketed donor to cover the shortfall, the University of Maryland’s athletic department will proceed with plans to cut at least seven of its 27 varsity teams this weekend.

For those who questioned my post about cost containment this is example 1. And this is a supposed Big 5 school for those who question where this ends up.

Thankfully, ECU is one of those 22 programs that generate a profit; the last time I checked we brought in $1M more each year than we spent. If we can do it, I do not understand how many BCS teams can not.

Maryland athletics coaches earn 24 mill...Football 2-10.
Southern Miss entire athletic budget 20 mill... Football 12-2 and ranked. Basketball made NCAA tourney. Hmmm.

RE: Maryland dropping 7 sports
From article, Title IX seems to have little to do with it - instead, it is the Football and Basketball teams that are driving the deficit - huge capital projects for those teams are generating massive deficits.

They should have never fired Fridge and hired Edsall. The buy out and new contract would have easily paid for some of those sports.

Impressive for a nonprofit organization wouldn't you say?

So much for that Big 10 or Big 12 invite. Couldn't afford the Payout to leave.

Too funny!

As a Ron Paul supportor I would have thought that you'd understand exactly how the ECU athletic department makes it's revenue. Significant amount of subsidies.

Charging each student over $500 a year to fund the athletic department doesn't mean the athletic department is profitable.

I'm willing to bet that Maryland doesn't pay for any of those uniforms.

At VT, the school gets paid 1 million to wear nike and gets everything for all sports given to them to wear.

Also, 27 sports is about 7 more than most other schools so this isn't like they'll have the minimum number of sports either.

Maryland will probably end up paying Randy Edsall not to coach any longer after this season too. That's going to add to the deficit...

yes, but track & field is a pretty significant one to cut.

that also limits their ability to recruit certain football players.

Lol, like being able to recruit track and field has previously helped the terps in football. Maybe they should offer Sumo and get some linemen.04-cheers

RE: Maryland dropping 7 sports
Maryland just had too many sports (27). I'm sure they want to have 1st class football and basketball, and you don't get there by spending money on men's tennis and women's water polo (plus a few more sports). Of course, the biggest problem is the 11% of their revenue they spend on debt service...

Which is part of the reason that Outdoor Track will be saved while the other 7 die.

This was probably overdue. I'd like to see Maryland sponsor every sport, but some of those 27 we had no business sponsoring right now. Competitive cheer wasn't an NCAA sport and didn't have much reason to be varsity while Water Polo is a small sport dominated by California schools. Both those teams were good, but don't fit at Maryland. Unfortunately those easy cuts were both women's sports so we had to keep Title IX compliance.

Men's tennis isn't a bad sport to cut since we're pretty awful and most of the top players are already pro when they hit college age. Swimming hurts to cut, especially given that we have a great facility for it. The ones I really think we ought to have been able to save are Indoor Track and Cross Country. Hopefully in the coming years with revenues going up, Indoor Track will be easy to revive with Outdoor still alive. I think longterm about 2 dozen sports would be optimal.

Notice how many other programs use subsidies? We subsidize about 40% of our athletic budget. For perspective we we subsidize much less than Rutgers, the same % as USF and a little more than Cincy.

If you sort by % you really don't even get into the less than 25% range on there until you hit the Big 5 conferences. I'd say we're doing pretty damn good considering we've got a paltry $1.2 million / year TV deal.

You must be a Wolp Fack fan.
