On the subject of a playoff, how about this??
Editor's Note: I had originally posted this on the C-USA board earlier, and it got a few replies, but I was curious to see what type of response it would get over here

To be honest, I don't why I didn't think of this earlier. My new plan creates two distinct playoffs for Div I FBS: one that has a playoff for the NC and another one that kinda serves as FBS' NIT.

All conference champions (yes, even the WAC, MAC, and Sun Belt) would get auto bids to the NC playoffs and some conferences may wind up snagging a few precious wildcards. However, the playoff sites would be determined by the NCAA, not the bowls or schools.

The bowls, including the current BCS bowls, would serve as consolation games. Rose Bowl gets highest Big Ten-Pac 12 teams that didn't get invited, Sugar Bowl gets SEC-Big XII, Orange gets ACC and whoever, Fiesta Bowl gets us (C-USA) and whoever. :D Anyway, traditional bowl games stay, and the conference champions get to slug it out for who's the best. Ideas & criticisms??

I agree with the idea of having a 16 team playoff with all 11 conference champions and 5 at-large teams.
Then you would have the bowl games with the top conference representatives who didn't make the playoff:

Rose: Big 10 - Pac 12
Sugar: SEC - Big 12
Orange: ACC - Big East
Fiesta: Mountain West - Conference USA
Chic Fil A: Sun Belt - MAC
Cotton: WAC - Independent team

I suppose you could make those bowl games into an NIT tournament but I'm not sure if that is necessary.

Maybe there could be "conference challenges" in the post season. The top 5 teams from each conference would get matched up against the top 5 teams from another conference. Fans would be more likely to watch all 5 games instead of just watching the game that involves their own team. Maybe you could even take it a step further. The conferences that win the challenge would advance to play the winners of the other conference challenges. It would be a "conference challenge tournament." The teams involved would be separate from the teams that made the playoffs.

Well, I should have specified not an NIT tourny, but rather what you state as bowl games with the top conference representatives who did not make the playoffs.
Basically it would be a NCAA FBS playoff and the Bowl Championship Series. The BCS being a consolation prize for those who didn't make the playoff cut.
