Rolleyes OT: Fitbud vs El Paso
El Paso city council has approved the move to build a $50 million AAA baseball stadium in downtown El Paso only a little more than a mile down the road from UTEP. I heard rumors our President was in attendance and was in support of this measure. Could UTEP baseball be using that stadium in the future? I know it has been a pipe dream before but does anyone else think this could have legs?

http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_20937...dium-today

Edit: Diana Natalacio actually had a letter showing her full support of the stadium.

RE: UTEP Baseball?
I was at the meeting today...really exciting with the stadium being built along with the downtown development plans. She was not there but was represented by Coach Tim Floyd who read a statement from the Pres. in support of this stadium. No mention of UTEP baseball but what you suggest makes sense.

RE: UTEP Baseball?
I'm thinking of taking a look at the new downtown condos. I could see myself living there, buying season baseball tickets, taking the trolley ride to the park, then taking the trolly to Cinci St. for a few cold ones, then take it back to the downtown condo.

Doing the same for UTEP bball games in the winter.

I've said it before... This town is on the verge of doing some great things..... FINALLY!

As for all the naysayers, they need to move to Las Cruces, where nothing happens, and they are happy with that.

Sounds like a great plan for you. Living downtown in those condos could get expensive in a few years so buying now could be a smart move. The downtown entertainment district along with the arts district will obviously grow with the new baseball stadium. The plans that are starting to be implemented are just amazing.

We have plenty of naysayers in Charlotte too.

A group in S. Charlotte is trying to secede from the city because they "pay all the taxes and get no benefits."

That part of town does pay about 50% of all taxes in Charlotte, but what they are ignoring is that virtually all focus the last 20 years was put on building S. Charlotte and Uptown into what they are today.

Now that the city is focusing on other parts of the city, they want to take their ball and go home.

UTEP will not be playing baseball anytime soon, if ever. There are too many financial hurdles to overcome at this time. Unless you win the lottery and donate a boatload of dinero.

RE: UTEP Baseball?
Baseball would be great considering all the HS baseball talent El Paso has. But Title IX and a tight budget makes baseball as a pipe dream for now.

I always knew El Paso had lots of potential and hopefully things are moving in the right direction. It was really bad when El Pasoans were questiong why I chose UTEP and El Paso for college considering I'm from L.A. and I just graduated from HS in DFW. I always said, why not? Have some faith in your community. Looks like they're getting it now.

How many schollies does it take to field a Div 1 baseball team? Does Title 9 require a matching number of new women's schollies?
Coaching, equipment costs, travel, what does it really add up to?

We need to know the magic number before dismissing the idea out of hand.

at UTEP, a full scholarship for 2011-2012 is projected to cost nearly $16,265.00 for tuition, room and board and books... so 10 of those for men's baseball, plus 10 or so for a new women's sport(s), plus coaches, assistants, facilities, staffing, equipment, other budgetary stuff.... I was told by someone a few years ago in the Ath Dept that UTEP would need 5 million plus to just to have a realistic shot of putting baseball out there.

El Paso has new condos downtown? And what other projects are going down there? I've heard people say things are starting to happen downtown, but I haven't heard any specifics of what's in the pipeline...

RE: UTEP Baseball?
I was reading the comments the other day on the El Paso Times Facebook link to an article about the stadium proposal passing, and I couldn't believe the vitriol being posted. Probably nine out of ten people posting were against the stadium, calling it a waste of money, calling El Paso backwards, etc. I can't believe how short-sighted some people are, and that they couldn't get it through their skulls that this project is vital to bringing life back to downtown, and revitalizing El Paso itself...

The movers and shakers in El Paso and UTEP need to get to work to have UTEP take over the medical school from TT. That's just not right. I know it's good for El Paso either way but much better for UTEP if it's theirs. Damn Texas politicians.

It's the nature of El Pasoans.

All my life growing up there, people complained about nothing to do in El Paso, and how the city never moved forward. Then, when something would be proposed, the people bashed it into the ground saying how the city was too small for such projects, or how other things needed to be done like fixing streets. They're backwards in their thinking.

El Pasoans don't realize that projects like this can lead to bigger things. Creating business and new developement in response to these projects are just a part of it, and that helps the city as a whole. But, let them cry, it's coming either way.....

Title IX concerns I guess would be your own stumbling block for men's baseball. I guess you could add Women's beach volleyball :D
