At least one, may be two would be cool. Any one ever proposed a tunnel? Wonder how difficult it would be to go under 5th?
YES! Ive always wondered why thats never been brought up. Still a lot of students would probably continue to play a real life version of frogger across 5th ave.
You can tell the freshman by who looks both ways on 5th.

True, ive seen a couple that arn't used to one way streets turn the opposite way and almost get smacked on 5th. It took me a bit when I first came to get used to one way streets,

[MorganFreemanvoice]So let me get this straight: There is already a problem with getting across this road because of poor drainage problems, there are viaducts around the city that can't stay clear of water, and Marshall/Huntington has little funds to fund such a project. And your plan is to dig a tunnel under this street? Good luck. [/MorganFreemanvoice]
Bonus points if you can tell me the movie this is somewhat from.

Plus tunnels in Huntington are always creepy. ALWAYS. It would be a constant pain in the ass chasing bums out of there for the security staff.

I'm a little late to this discussion but wanted to point out Marshall actually is planning for the possibility of a 5th Avenue tunnel at some point in future. The land use master plan released a few years ago mentions the tunnel as well as many other future improvements. Look at page 78 master plan/page 86 on the pdf file http://www.marshall.edu/vpoperations/mas...%20Use.pdf

The underpasses were all built forever ago. Probably little thought given to drainage. I believe the R.R. companies built them (may be wrong) likely put in as little thought as possible to auto traffic/ as long as the tracks were cool, they were fine. If both ends were indoors water seeping in might be the only concern.

Wouldn't a tunnel be more expensive than a bridge?

Of course but a tunnel with a plaza over top would be much better functionally as well as aesthetically. I would dare say it would end up being safer too since a lot of people would probably rather just cross the street instead of walking up some stairs to the bridge, walk over the bridge, then walk back down stairs on the other side. With the tunnel campus would more naturally flow from north of 5th to south of 5th. Instead of having a major road split the campus in two, the road would be diverted underneath Marshall leaving the campus more unified. If Marshall could ever get some Federal and state dollars to go forward with a 5th Ave tunnel they should.

OH! Brain fart, dude, I was thinking just a walking tunnel underneath 5th street. What you're saying sounds pretty awesome.

I probably should have explained it better in my first post since its different than the pedestrian tunnel that was previously mentioned. The tunnel Marshall is planning for at some point in the future is for cars traveling down 5th ave. If you make a car tunnel there, it would allow for a plaza over top where people could walk across and not have to worry about crossing 5th. Here is a little diagram from the Marshall land use plan I previously mentioned.

That would be awesome. I just don't see how we would have anywhere close to the money for that (school, city, or state).

Route 60 is a U.S. designated highway. This means the Federal government should pay a big portion of the project. If I'm not mistaken I think it's 80%. According to the Marshall land use plan a 5th Avenue tunnel project is estimated to cost around 30 million. If the feds payed 80% of that, the state would then have to come up with about 6 million. 6 million is a lot of money but certainly doable. If Marshall were serious about possibly doing the project they could get in touch with Nick Rahall since he is on the U.S. House Transportation Committee. Im sure he would be willing to help.
