RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
Imagine the presser when they announce the Fighting Rebeccas of Sunny Brook, Elon, College of Chunkerson, Davidson (Or should that be Currys'son since they've done nothing without them), and Furman! Oh boy will that grab national news.

Sadly, we will have no chance of an at-large this year. Not because of talent. But because we will still be playing all those crappy teams in the CAA. Look at what that means to our RPI. UNCW will struggle to equal Townson's win total for 2011-2012 of 1 win (their RPI will be dead last in the nation). Townson will struggle to triple their win total this year (their RPI will be in the 310s). JMU is JMU (with luck they might get up to 275 RPI). WisM sucks (will be below 275). LesserGSU will be horrible again, back down to the low 200s where they usually are. Hofstra, Northeastern and UDel will all be in the 100s. Maybe in the low 100s at that.

Bobby Wilder reacts to the CAA's ruling:

Quote:I am asking all the 12th Monarchs to remain positive with the news and be even "louder and prouder" when you cheer for your Football Monarchs starting September 1st at S.B. Ballard Stadium. The history of the powerful CAA has shown that as many as five teams will represent the conference in the playoffs. Your Monarchs want to be one of those teams in 2012.

RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
Ga. St., ODU barred from CAA tourney

Quote:Andy Katz - Georgia State coach Ron Hunter gathered his team together Tuesday and told his players that they are essentially on their own next season.

"I told them we're an independent," Hunter said. "That's what we are now. It's no fault of theirs. We made a move for football. And we're paying the consequences. The bad part is that this is the only league in the country where this is happening. From this point forward, we're an independent basketball team."

Technically, Georgia State and Old Dominion will be in the Colonial Athletic Association and play a league schedule. But they will not play in the conference tournament...

Quote:A source close to Georgia State said that the CAA decision Tuesday, which was unanimous by the presidents in the league, has forced the school to look at getting into the Sun Belt immediately for next season. Virginia Commonwealth left the CAA for the Atlantic-10 for the same reason, bypassing the bylaw.

Quote:Taylor said the decision by ODU to bump up football made the move necessary.

"The CAA doesn't offer it," Taylor said. "It just seems very narrow-minded. They're hurting 17 sports. If you want to leave this league, you better do it like the Baltimore Colts in the middle of the night. Most of the leagues make everything seamless as possible. The CAA is a completely different act."

RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
GREAT article. If you haven't read it, read it now. Thanks monarchman.

A couple more quotes from the above article:

Quote:"Since the 1988-89 season and including this coming season the WAC has had 15 teams play in championships after withdrawing from the league, four who did for two seasons in TCU, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii," said Benson, who was the WAC commissioner until his recent switch to the Sun Belt. "Were there awkward times, yes, but to penalize student athletes and coaches who didn't have anything to do with the decision to change conferences just isn't right."

Quote:The CAA will have only seven eligible schools for the conference tournament because Towson and UNC Wilmington are also ineligible due to poor APR scores. The top seed will get a bye to the semifinals, and there will be three quarterfinal games in a seven-team tournament.

How WEAK is that!? The top seed gets a bye into the SEMIFINAL GAME!? What. a. joke. I sincerely hope it flops miserably and the games (all 6 of them) are unwatchable.

Quote:"They gave a 3-week-old weather report," Taylor said. "The league grandstanded so long to make a such a big announcement.

I would love to hear some of the closed-door chatter in the ODU/CAA offices these past couple of weeks.

That painting over the CAA logo to say C-USA? I'm liking that idea a lot more these days.

I hope both schools change their logos early and not just on the court but on all of the teams uniforms or better yet leave the logo and put a thick black line through it.

I agree about the logos. It's been made clear that we're essentially on our own for the lame-duck season, so might as well take a small step towards the transition.

You can't expect these presidents to do the right thing when they continue to allow the failed commissioner Yeager to lead this league. The CAA went from in the news to singing the blues. Good luck to them.

Already changed mine.

When Richmond left, the CAA tourney was 6 teams for one season.

I've been saying it on MN so sorry if redundant, but I think we should take the logo down, void the schedule, rally games with CUSA along with our existing non conf games and classify as independent for 1 year. That way, if Painter's a stud and Blaine can get em to the dance, we don't make another dime for that small time league. We're bigger than them by any measure and it's time to stop propping them up. LOL.

So, CUSA teams should cancel existing contracts and add games with ODU? I just can't see that happening...we'd lose, what, 18 conferences games and add how many "CUSA" games for any teams willing to add a game at this point? It's simply not feasible. Trying to make all that work is more difficult than trying to make a run at an at-large bid.

Maybe they should just scrap the tourney, have Drexel play Mason for the title, winner gets the 16 seed playin game!

We could drop the crap games that cost us at-large bids every year like Towson and UNCW. Just play the decent CAA teams.

The new ODU chant for the year should be "CAA sucks"

What Old Dominion should do to show our appreciation to the CAA is send them our old text books. 20% of the men's basketball teams on NCAA academic probation are from the CAA. Way to make the MEAC look good.
