RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
I don't think it would be impossible to make the move for 2012. If I'm not mistaken, football is the only C-USA sport that uses a divisional format so an imbalance wouldn't really be a big deal in other sports.
The C-USA basketball schedules haven't be released yet. Might be a challenge to add another conference game or two to the schedules, but not impossible.
Travel costs, etc for ODU would take a considerable jump up right away with a move in 2012.
RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
I think URI is a different animal entirely. They're a CAA football member, which in essence, is basically an affiliate membership to start with. In the non-rev world, where affiliates are more common, there's never been a penalty assessed in my years of covering wrestling from one school jumping to another conference in the case where one was an affiliate member joining a conference as an all-sports member.
When Virginia Tech joined the ACC, their wrestling was in the EWL. They competed in the EWL and didn't have any problem leaving to join the ACC from one year to the next.
RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
STRONG words from Selig:
Quote:No other conference in America is as punitive," Selig said. "Given what we've meant for the CAA, given that we felt the CAA would want to have true competition at the highest level, without an asterisk or a championship that might be somewhat tainted by not having a complete field, we felt confident we would be allowed to participate. Obviously that was not the case.

no surprise....you just hope that good men will rise to the occasion to correct a rule that is not in the best interest of the student athlete or the marketability of the conference.
looking forward to the first game..........aaarrrrhhhh!!!

I will try this again.
There is no rule, other than that of the Presidents being tasked to set a final date of eligibility. The rule as written does not seem so noxious, except it allows the Council of Presidents to be "pooty" if they want to.
Here it is Article 4.06.E states: (emphasis added)
“Upon notice of an institution’s intent to withdraw, the institution’s teams become ineligible on a date determined by the remaining members to compete for Association team championships.”
They could have just as easily voted to set that date after the CAAT.
GaSt and ODU neither appealed anything; nor did they nefariously attempt to circumvent anything.
ODU and GaSt merely asked that the cutoff date be set to sometime after the CAAT.
No institution would have responsibly done otherwise.

RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
I'm not surprised by the decision at all. I fully expected it. However, it cements my idea that ODU should "flip the bird" to the CAA and change the logo on our court THIS year. They don't want us representing them...then we won't.
Maybe we could just cross out the middle "A" in our CAA court logo and hand paint a "US" above it (for a "CusA" logo). Our players could use it as motivation for every home game. LOL.

No surprise. You slap someone in the face you have to expect that they might slap back.
I really don't see how we slapped the CAA in the face. VCU slapped them in the face by leaving immediately. We gave the league a year's notice and are playing the lame duck season within their rules and guidelines.

Agreed.
However, I DO think their hands were tied.
Even though the Council of Presidents could have voted to let us and GaSt play for CAA championships, the precedent not to do so was set in 2000/2001.
I think they probably thought, and IMO correctly; that to allow us to play would be inconsistant when compared with past decisions, and therefore show weakness.
That would not be the best face to put forward when trying to woo new members.
RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
ODU is no longer in the CAA. Remove the logos. No petty act by the CAA Presidents can equal the irraparable damage ODU and VCU did by leaving. You can't expect these presidents to do the right thing when they continue to allow the failed commissioner Yeager to lead this league. The CAA went from in the news to singing the blues. Good luck to them.
RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
God I am thrilled to be leaving this small time, petty, bitter little conference.
What an absolute JOKE the CAA tourney in Richmond will be this coming year. If GMU doesn't manage to make the CAA final, there will be literally hundreds of people there. The CAA will look utterly pathetic on national TV for all the country to see and we will all just sit back and laugh at how ridiculous Tom Yeager and his worthless conference look.
A 7 team conference tourney where 6 of the teams can't even bring 300-400 people on a Monday night......man, I'm SOOOOOOO bummed we didn't stay in THAT conference lol.

Agree. On all points.
It won't happen, but boy wouldn't it be nice to sweep the CAA regular season games on our way out the door?

Do we know if Richmond, American, and ECU asked to play their final season?

Obviously, ODU wouldn't take that action, it's punishing the student athletes out of vindictive spite.
However, it would be cool if ODU finished with the best season record, thus putting an asterick on the "CAA champion", was then awarded a higher seed/bye in the NCAAs and requested that the NCAA consider ODU as not being a CAA team for seeding purposes, thus allowing a first or second round matchup with our soon to be former conference mates (a JMU at ODU FB rematch playoff game comes immediately to mind).
RE: 3PM announcement of CAA plans and tourney eligibility
I wonder, if it looks like we are an at-large team, if we could simply depart the CAA and go independent after the final regular season game, thus the tournament revenue would be ours?

that would be sweet if we could do that, but somehow I doubt it works that way...so does this also mean that any wins or losses against ODU won't count in the standings? Thats a big advantage for Drexel I would think b/c they only play us once while GMU plays us twice.
while I'm not surprised by this outcome I don't think that the CAA folks needed to schedule a press conference just to tell GSU and ODU to F off. wouldn't a memo or something suffice?
