The Wright Waters Trophy....
is now what we all compete for in Football.

http://www.sunbeltsports.org/ViewArticle...=205437395

The annual winner of the Sun Belt Conference’s football regular season will take home the H. Wright Waters Trophy as the league approved the honor at its recent conference meetings in San Destin, Florida.

Waters served as Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference from 1998 through 2012 and is largely responsible for football becoming a league sponsored sport. The Sun Belt had been a viable entity on the nation’s collegiate athletic map since its founding in 1976, but Waters made the call for a serious approach to gaining access to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Due to his leadership, the league played its inaugural season under his watch in 2001.

“The best word to sum up Wright Waters’ tenure as Sun Belt Conference Commissioner is ‘transformational,’” said Sun Belt Conference President and Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins. “His leadership brought football to our league, put the Sun Belt in the Football Bowl Subdivision and, consequently, we are stronger academically, athletically and financially today than at any time in history. Naming our football championship trophy after Wright Waters is an appropriate way to honor this visionary leader who changed the Sun Belt Conference for the better.”

He has taken a beating from fans at times but he was the guy when football came in and as it has improved. A very good honor for him. We would be glad to take it home this fall....

How about if we give the new guy longer than 3 months before we pass judgement. Porky Pig was F**c*ing disaster.

No 01-rivals.

They guy has barely had time to sit at his desk and he made moves to stem the losses of FIU and UNT. Not saying he wont be good or bad, but good grief you gotta give him some time.

RE: The Wright Waters Trophy....
From 1987 until he left in 1998, Thompson was given a mandate to make the American South, and later the Sun Belt a football playing conference.

Waters was hired in 1999, we kicked off our first season of Sun Belt football in 2001. North Texas, Troy, ASU, FAU, Middle Tenn, and Louisiana have all represented the league in the New Orleans Bowl, created by his relationship with the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation despite objections from the Sugar Bowl. Spent many hours on the phone trying to talk UNT off the ledge when the WAC called.

Guy didn't heal the sick or raise the dead but we have a Sun Belt Conference in football because of him.

I have to admit that on the Troy website I was probably the worst of em with some tongue in cheek renditions of fictional meetings with Wright.....as Ark St. fan said he did get some things done and UNT and all discussions but there were some monumental stupid comments about bowls etc.....and yes we do not know how Benson will be in comparison. I will miss Wright as many pundits miss George Bush the younger.....just an easy target and so much fun to shoot jokes at them.......I actually liked and voted for George so much of my fun poking comments made about Wright were for laughter as well as just like the guy who walks around with a kick me sign on his back.....It really is hard not to do so. Now we will have a little bit of Wright that will automatically spark the debate among players at winning schools in the future......."Who da hell is that dude on top of our trophy?"

Like I said, not perfect but the guy we needed for that time. He was ready to pack in and look for something new, the presidents talked him out of it. Came back a couple years later and told them it's time to move on. I like that, nothing worse than a Franco Harris trying to hang on past their time. I would imagine his greatest Sun Belt disappointment was getting the basketball schedule mandates passed and then seeing them quickly stripped away because the coaches hated them. Likely no accident that their repeal coincided with the Belt hitting new lows in basketball.

I'm optimistic about Benson, he understood what was happening to the WAC far better than the presidents did and they just didn't heed his warnings. One can only hope that with the amount of money a commissioner is paid that the advice will be listened to. The fall of the WAC is directly related to the failure to heed the advice given 2000-2004. Once Idaho was invited rather than UNT, Louisiana, ASU, MT, the league's fate was basically sealed. That ended up being quite good for southern football but it has left western football in a helluva mess.

I'm fairly confident the change will be in name only, the trophy will look exactly the same as it always has.
