I honestly don't know too much about how to judge a conference commissioner, nor do I know too much about Waters failures/successes but it seems like 80% of the people here don't approve of him. No matter what forum you visit(MAC, CUSA, MWC, ACC ETC.) football fans are bashing their commissioner. Everyone thinks their commissioner is the worst of them all. Coincidence?

It's because pretty much every fan across the country thinks their school and their conference deserves better.

Personally I think Waters did a fine job, we're a group of schools that mostly have low budgets, low endowments, low attendance, and almost zero interest outside of our own alumni. That's not an easy package to sell and I don't know why most people on here so flippantly assume someone else could have done a better job.

And we've shot ourselves in the foot how many times? ASU gave Nutt three years when he should have been let go. WKU learned from ASU's lower the contract disaster by doing the same thing except pulling the trigger faster. I think everyone except Troy football has a story about hanging letting a coach hang around too long.

At ASU we've played the "can't do that" game. Perkins says give me the AD gig, we can't do that, he quit.
Tommy Tuberville wants the job, we tell him he can either have the salary he wants or clean out and hire new assistants but can't have both the first year, he passes.
John Bobo wants more money for assistants, we can't afford it.
We hire Hollis and three of assistants get paid what Bobo made as head coach.
The AD gets fired and Hollis becomes AD.
I don't count paying Malzahn double our final offer to Freeze because Malzahn opened up some wallets that had never opened for ASU before.

Arkstfan,

I've caught hell from lots of SBC fans because I think Benson with his past job performance was a terrible hire for the SBC. To me he's already proven he's a boob.

I think in an effort not to repeat what happened to him in the WAC, he jumped the gun, inviting the two teams he did waaay prematurely, rather than waiting to see what actually was happening and what was best for the current SBC members.

I was dissapointed that he didn't promote inviting more "established" teams that fit in with who the SBC is (like AppSt and GaSo) instead of what we got and have been chastized for it.

Do you think I'm completely wrong?

RE: The Wright Waters Trophy....
I liked what he tried to convince the WAC to do but could not get the votes to do.

You aren't the only person who has wondered if all those years of getting "I'm leaving" phone calls has colored judgment but the presidents are the ones who vote. I think it is rather reasonable to believe that there was consideration of Georgia Southern, App, James Madison, Liberty, Lamar, and some non-football schools like Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, and probably UNC-Greensboro and others and in the end, Georgia State proximity + market made them the choice and a desire to stay in Texas made Texas State the choice and the need to balance out UALR made UTA the choice.

I could sit here and make a compelling case for or against them and any other candidate (well probably not Lamar) but the ones picked were the ones that could be added without "Denver regret" (ie. if they didn't pan out quite as well as hoped, they wouldn't be a long hard trip for as many schools).
