Marshall Makes Henderson Center Upgrades for 2012-13
Quote:June 1, 2012

By JACK BOGACZYK

HERDZONE.COM COLUMNIST

HUNTINGTON – So, you’re sitting toward the mid- to upper reaches of the Henderson Center at a Marshall basketball game, thinking about how nice the Herd has made it for those courtside seating patrons.

You’re wondering when you’ll be able to enjoy a game without getting as hot or red in the face as Tom Herrion, or trying to listen to announcements that sound like they’re coming from Charlie Brown’s teacher.

You know on those Peanuts’ TV shows, the “Wha-wha-wha-wha-wha.”

Your wait is over.

With a $405,000 sound system upgrade, the Herd’s 9,054-seat home for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball will be a much more comfortable place to watch the action, no matter where you sit.

Testing on the just-completed sound system upgrade is ongoing this and next week, said Scott Morehouse, Marshall’s associate athletic director for operations and facilities.

They just address 2 of my 3 long-time complaints about the Henderson Center! If they could make the hallways and common areas look more organic rather than 1980's concrete pre-fabs, then I'm perfectly happy with the Cam.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Its taken what seems to be a couple of decades to upgrade the airflow & sound, so hopefully further renovations will be forthcoming. However, I have heard that Hamrick doesn't like the Cam and would like to replace it at some point. Though that could be nothing more than a pipe dream.

Ive often heard this. Ive head by the time he actually retires he wants a new arena in place to be built. Something like was done at ECU with their baseball stadium. Hamrick was the AD that secured all the money and land to build the baseball stadium. But it wasn't built until a year after he left for UNLV.

We could build it in the same spot and play a season or two at the Big Sandy Arena...

I would love to have an arena like the Thomas & Mack (UNLV) or Ted Constant Convocation Center (ODU). The T&M center is way to big for us (18.5K) and The Ted is probably a lil to small (8.6K). But with aprox 9.5K chairback seats and 500 in suites would be just about right. The CAM seats just a lil over 9K right now.

yeah, there's nothing wrong with the size of the arena, it just seems that the place has always had problems.

In any case, if we do get a new arena; I hope we keep the Cam Henderson name attached to it; maybe name the court after Hal Greer...

At first the CAM and Huntington Civic center was suppose to be built as one, it was suppose to be a 12.5K arena. About the same size of the Charleston Civic center. But as usual the leaders of Huntington had already decided to built it at its current location, which isn't campus friendly. They would not compermise with Marshall, who wanted it located where VMF is. The city of Huntington parks wouldn't agree to sell the VMF at the time. It only took 31 years and 4.2 millon dollars in cost to keep the VMF running for them to understand that the VMF had out lived it's life.

About the only thing the city of Huntington has got right with Marshall in the last 25 years is letting them aquire 6 city blocks in 1989. To construct Joan C. Edwards stadium.

The stadium was first purposed in 1988 and although it had the support of almost everyone in and around Huntigton. A lot of people didn't think the city would give Marshall the power to buy property to build.

imagine how different we'd be right now if they did let Marshall get the property.

Im sure you meant to say "Didn't" let them aquire. My guess is we would still be in the SoCon, but in a much smaller stadium. Maybe a rebuilt Fairfield. We would have maybe had one NFL draft pick in like the 6th or 7th round and 2-3 UFAs. We would have never seen Byron Leftwich, Ahmad Bradshaw or Vinny Curry play for The Herd.

We would probably be middle of the pack SoCon team most years with a playoff like every 3-4 years. Fighting it out with Furman and the Cit for the 3rd or 4th place. Its something that is scarey but could have been a very real possibility.
