I have been to that IKEA store:

parking is a bear
you can spend 5 hours in there and not look at 1/3 of it

I went to go pick up cabinets since I was in the area to bring them back to Memphis. I had part numbers for everything, it was all in one area, and it still took 3 hours. The place is simply massive.

Wise words from a wise man. I don't know how much of the menu they have, but there is a Cafe Intermezzo in the airport. The atmosphere is most certainly not the same, but if you are desperately bored, you could grab a coffee and dessert there.

As for Ikea...I agree with tigerengineer, be careful with your time. That place is a blackhole that will suck you in.

It's not gonna suck me in. My fiancee thinks that place is a warehouse of goodness. I Google IKEA and H&M stores when we go on vacation just to prepare myself for the inevitable. Lord knows she knows where ever location is.

Thanks everyone! These are great ideas. I'm not the biggest shopper but i may drop in IKEA just to check it out.

I've been told the Vortex is cool, too.

Thanks for the tips. I will be in Atlanta in August.

If you are interested in updating anything in your house at all, IKEA will have it. The downside of not living in Atl, is that if you want cabinets or other heavy items, the shipping cost is almost equal to the cost of the items.

That's why I was there. The parking lot was filled with Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida cars.

It IS pretty expensive..yet still a must do when in Atlanta. Take MARTA to North Avenue Station and walk 2 blocks to the East (straight ahead when you come out of the station onto the street). If one wants to go shopping afterwards, get back on MARTA, disembark at Arts Center and take the shuttle to Atlantic Station. Once again, my wife makes me go there every time we are in that area cause of H&M and Ikea.

We have a five hour layover on our honeymoon in ATL. Are Ikea, H&M, and Varsity all close to each other?

On your honeymoon and already having to go to Ikea and H&M? Haha, I kid. I actually like H&M. Not a damn thing there fits me, but my wife can buy a bunch of stuff and not cause me a heart attack at the register.

I thought I'd finagled a way to Atlanta myself for the Yankees series. I need to get over there for work anyway; haven't been to a Braves game in way too long; figured I'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone and let work pay for airfare, car, hotel, etc. Then something told me to make sure nothing else was going on that week. Sure enough, my boss is on vacay and I have to man the fort. Enjoy yourself, Kitten. Hope your sadness after leaving the Ted are your only disappointments.

I love H&M for the exact same reason. I don't shop there but my fiancee can buy a voatload of stuff for $100. However, if they ever put one in Memphis we might have a problem. Ha

That is the absolute truth. There is a level of comfort in having a 3-4hr buffer zone from the closest H&M.

They've got some cool stuff for men, but I'm pretty sure socks are the only thing that may fit me, but if the way their XL = most anywhere else M is any indication, I'm not so certain about that.

That's all well and good for you, but when you can get to H&M within 2 hours with many friends in the city the trips become more frequent... I like the stuff but can't fit most of what they have. That's what I get for being 6'1" 230 lbs...

I've got my Yankees-Braves tickets. I'm planning to go to the GA Aquarium, Coca Cola Museum and Centennial Park. Maybe Stone Mountain.

Any other suggestions? I was also told to stay in Mid-town.

Thanks!

Was there just a couple of weeks ago. We were only downtown for two days, downtown, and no car, so we went touristy.

Aquarium and Coke museum were cool. The coke museum was really rather quick tour about an hour. We skipped the 3d movie in there though. The tasting room with 80 or so flavors from around the world was the highlight!

Aquarium was really nice and it took us about 3 rushed hours there.

Aside from that you could do a CNN Studio tour and walk through Centennial Park while you are right there too.

Also TAXIS are a complete ripoff if you are going point to point anywhere downtown. They charge a flat $8 fare, plus a $2 fuel surcharge per passenger. So, there was 4 of us and it was $16 one way for just over a mile trip. After that we hoofed it everywhere needless to say.

RE: Must - do's in Atlanta?
The Underground is like most urban malls. It was pretty nice when it opened (late 90s?) then turned bad after just a couple years. I went around 1999 or 2000 and loved it (was just a kid) then went back last summer and was shocked at the difference. It's a pretty cool concept as a mall under a road in the middle of downtown...just has had a similar fate as The Peabody Place in Memphis.

This is the underground's second life as an entertainment area. It opened in the late 60s or early 70s and was shut down later for a decade or so before reopening. It's been a hit or miss proposition for many from day 1.
