And people in rural Pennsylvania have more in common with people in rural southern areas than they do with the average person in Philadelphia...

The man is right. My fiancee is a western PA girl. When I go there they are more like my hometown in South MS except they talk funny and they don't serve sweet tea. Same could be said for Oregon folks that shower and don't hug trees.

From my stint in NY I don't know if I could say if there were any resemblance to my hometown anywhere in that state.

Did you try the Upstate area around places like Olean, Jasper, and Horseheads?

I did not. I was mainly working out of Staten Island and Manhatten on the NY side and Newark, Trenton, and Bayonne on the NJ side. I didn't get a chance to go upstate. Now I will say my fiancee's parents have a camp up in Bradford, PA (Home of Zippo lighters) and it's roughly a 15 minute drive to the NY state line. Prettiest part of NY I'd ever seen.

That's OK, we've heard it all before. You aren't man enough to make it in WV anyway.. you moved off to the big city because it was easy.

Thought it was funny when the recession hit and everyone all over the country was whining and crying about their jobs and how hard it was to make it and boo hoo!

People in WV just laughed at them and said "Welcome to our reality, now be a man and do something about it!"

Go off and enjoy your easy life in the big city and be-little what you don't know about only because it makes you feel better about yourself.

I could take you to some places in VA that would leave no doubt in your mind that it is most certainly the South. Some examples - Dickinson County (home of Dr. Ralph Stanley), Buchanon County (the only county in the US that had 0 blacks for many years & one of the last courthouse lynching sites), and Russell County. Even closer to civilization like Floyd County/Amherst County/Pittsylvania County will convince you.

Being from the coal fields of VA, I can tell you that though the Hatfields & McCoys get the most publicity people have been hung and strung... stuck like pigs.. and disappearing for centuries in that area. The term "redneck" came from coal wars in where the companies abused miners to the point of war. Even today, the union miners will flatten your tires (or lips) if you cross them wrong.

I would advise watching "The Wild & Wonderful Whites of WV", produced by Jonny Knoxville. That's more a of a WV twist to the VA south.

I am a little confused about this statment. I thought that when Virginia voted for Succession, Northern Virginia aka West Virginia broke away from Virginia. Plus Kentucky never left the Union.

My VA town has maybe 150 people, my entire VA county under 40,000... and guess what, we live in houses not trailers. COGS 05-stirthepot

Back to the original topic.

I'm really enjoying this series. Gots to love the History Channel. They're at great pains to get the story right.

They called it a, uh, accent in 'Bama. Franklin and Parsons were the last names of most our clan in that state.

Actually, there are also 5 regional dialects within the state of Texas.

The H & M's? I finished the TV series and could not understand why all the killing among whites.

Hell, we didn't have that kind of deep hatred or disdain for Santa Anna's Mexicans or the Commanch' and Kiowa Indians, and
that was the group my Texas ancestors were involved with & quite violently to say the least.

For the record, I was just messing with you Marshall guys. I hope that's obvious to most.

WV got crapped on for a long time, and has been in nasty feuds like the Hatfields/McCoys & miner battles for a long time. But it seems the tides are changing a little with some alternative career options working in... so that's progress.
