Seriously, I wish I had not started this thread. Nothing but a can of worms.

I try to avoid cans of worms, but did open this one. :(

Well, whoever approved the new jerseys should have to answer for that ... and English needs to be upfront about it. That's an even better story than the original post. 05-stirthepot

It wasn't a "switch." The self-righteous carpetbaggers behind dropping the name Hurons simply banned it. I think we went a full school year before we came up with the overused Eagles.

So We should turn down state of the art Jerseys that Adidas is providing, and that no other school in the country is wearing and be the only MAC school with alternative uni's that kids eat up in recruiting? Thats D-U-M-B
This is such a NON story and this thread needs to go away

And maybe there is a reason the other schools aren't wearing them? Story gets better ...

Well, we are a test school for Adidas. So perhaps they chose EMU to try the jerseys out before the gave them to other schools?
You also have Adidas sponsoring other things in the Detroit area (Rapper, Big Sean and DJ Mo Beatz). So perhaps this all part of a bigger plan by Adidas for this market...? Who knows...?

NIU didn't have names on their jerseys either for a while, think it was coach Novak's idea. I much prefer jerseys with names on them. We're all trying to get our teams on TV, if you have a good player that sticks out from the rest why not have his name on there for TV-watching fans to remember? They aren't going to remember a number.

Dear Friends,
I've been reading on this thread about fans wanting to know players names, and the media wants to know names, and the players want their name on the jersey, however, I don't know where some of you sit at Rynearson, but I defy anyone to be able to read names if you are thirty or more rows up. My brother and I sit in the seat back area, and without binoculars you cannot read the names on the back of the jersey. So, if, you are media in the press box, you will not be able to read names on the backs of jersey's. So, all this blathering about being able to read names, depends on where you are sitting in the stadium.

Actually the solution is not on the back of the jerseys but have a GOOD video board with instant replays.

Or scoreboard messages: Gilett to Hoskins for 15 yards. QB sack by Mulumba.

I really think EMU needs to spend say 1 - 2M on a good video board.

This isn't the highest priority but once the other (smaller) stuff is done the scoreboard needs to be revisited.

Sorry this one was half baked for $ reasons.

Maybe the football contributors + EMU Foundation + maybe some Pepsi money can support a 5 - 10 year borrowing for the needed funds.

Ken,

Usually we are in agreement and I do think you bring up good points but I have no problems with seeing players name if I am sitting further up in the stands and it helps when you are watching the game on TV/internet. I started not to reopen this thread but I did...

RE: "I disagree, Coach English!"
I think the bottom line is that the team has accepted the transition to not having their names on their backs and it doesn't seem to have affected recruiting. They are excited about their new uniforms and are focusing on a Mac Championship. They have embraced the process and know they have the opportunity to make this program successful and with their success they will get more fans in the seats and more stadium improvements. The players that have been in the program for 3-4 years have seen vast improvement not only in the facilities but in the enthusiasm amoungst the team. Not that they spend a lot of time worrying about it but the positive comments from fans, on these boards and the media have helped to give them confidence because they now feel that people believe in them. They are ready to fight and prove they can do it. GO EAGLES! HURONS! GREEN & WHITE! EMU! P.S. I'd like to call them "Huron Eagles".

Huron Eagles! I like that. The only problem I have with the no names on the back is the fact that we have several duplicate numbers on the roster, i.e. #1 Quincy Jones, Darius Scott, #8 Alex Gillett, Kris Strange, etc. Granted one is on offense, one on defense but if I'm sharing a number, I want my name on my jersey, period.

I agree that the enthusiasm for this team keeps growing, but it HAS to translate in improved attendance this season! Even if we double last year's attendance figures, we'd still be near the bottom of the MAC, even so I'd take it. Go Huron Eagles!

Great points and you are correct, let's focus on the positives this team will accomplish in the season.. Maybe down the road English may change it back. (PS guys wasn't happy about the names being removed). I still don't understand the reason why but I will totally support the Coach. I really, really want Cheeks-in-Seats this season. I know we hired a few people for sport marketing but I haven't seen anything new yet. Anything else on sport talk besides the Coach show on Modays?

I love the name Huron Eagle. I am not sure about, but is there another team in college sports that had two names program? Example: If approved, could we change our name to the Huron-Eagle or does it have to be Huron or Eagle?

Great point Bob about the duplicate numbers, I had trouble with that last year when their names where on haha.
Nudge: off the top of my head there are the Nittany Lions, a bad example right now. If it was adopted I would think it should be "Huron Eagles". Referring to the tribe and/or the river and the eagles that they respect and/or live there.
