The conference commissioners and the university presidents have too much power. They decide who can join the conference. That power should go to athletic directors. They are the ones that have to schedule the games.

I disagree. The Presidents run the schools, they along with a BoG should make that call. Most AD's can't even find a decent FB or BBall coach let alone a conference.

The stockers and the checkers do the most of the work in the Wal-Marts so they should run the company.

There is still the illusion out there that academics play some role choosing a conference. So therefore the presidents and commissioners would like to have a hand in the decision making.

But geography is no longer a determining factor, with TV networks spending unprecedented dollars.

As Jalen Rose said on TV the other day, "The only maps that matter in conference realignment are the ones showing the location of the banks."

Who appointed the NCAA as God?

This is the age of globalization. Flying across the country isnt much longer than most of the old bus trips these teams used to have to take. Back in the day of Jim Brown how long do you think they sat on a bus or train going to play WVU? How about UF going to play Bama by bus? Or Washington traveling to UCLA?

A four hour plane ride is nothing.

^^^^^THIS.

My road trip to San Diego State last season was the most expensive one... slightly more than Georgia in ATL... The only difference was a couple of hours of plane ride.

Air Travel has revolutionized things for FB travel with team-charters. It really isn't a huge thing, whether 500 miles away or 1500.

Someone needs to research the Knight Commission and their 1991 report "Keeping Faith with the Student Athelete".

RE: NCAA
While I have all kinds of issues with colleges today, this isn't one of them. The athletic directors are an employee of the university responsible for one specific area. The president and board of trustees are in charge of the general running of the whole school. Regardless of whether the president and board of trustees are ultimately a better judge is irrelevant. The athletic directors are hired by them and they ultimately always have to have final say on big matters.
