Greek Life
Once again, another thread got me thinking. My first college (George Mason) had a HUGE Greek presence, but I was living at home and never pledged. ECU has a decent Greek life, but again, I never pledged.

So who here has pledged? Any stories to share? The more embarrassing and/or disgusting, the better COGS

RE: OT: Greek Life
Member of the Beta Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity at Marshall University. '95-'98. Currently I am the President of the Beta Nu Alumni Association and Board of Advisers.

I started posting on Marshall message boards in '99-00 as MUTeke and have just kept it through the years.

We rented a small stern wheeler for a booze cruise one night on the Ohio River in order to make enough money to pay off nationals for the semester. It was a great party. It's a wonder we all made it back to the marina with everyone still on board. On the bottom deck I remember taking a leak on the spinning sternwheel and the only thing separating me from it and the water was a plastic chain link rope. I vaguely remember walking by the wheelhouse and seeing the captain of the boat letting sorority girls take turns sitting on his lap and driving the boat.

MU ATO = Marshall University Alpha Tau Omega

Like my buddy MUTeke I too started posting I the old MU message boards in the late 90s and just kept using MU ATO to his day. I always knew I would rush when I got into college. I always liked what I saw at U of Illinois when I was there and had family members that told stories and older friends that were Greek. So it was a no brainer. I rushed in Fall of '98 and was active through 2002 before going on alumni status. I was Vice President and actually was voted President but I refused to move into the house and do was voted VP by default. Some of the best times of my life were with ATO brothers or directly involved in Fraternty activities. 3 of my groomsmen in my wedding were Fraternity Brothers. My only regret was that Marshall didn't have solid Greek Leadership that I saw at other schools and for this Marshall Greek life took a hit in the early 2000s and things could of been handled much better but it was what it was.

ATO and out next door neighbors the Tekes used to have legendary parties together. "Alpha Teke Omega" tailgate parties on GAMEDAY were spectacular! Back in the late 90s/early 2000s 95% of our games started at 7pm so we would start "tailgating at the house around 10am. So many people you could t even see the front yards.

The Teke House being next door to the ATO House meant I had a lot of ATO friends. I've got a couple photos that back up ATO's claim on the joint tailgates... too bad its nothing like that today.

It's difficult to express to the collegiate chapter now how much fun those joint TKE/ATO tailgates were without being "that guy". Back in my day... !

Alpha Tau Omega, Zeto Rho (University of Memphis)

I need to look up some statute of limitations before I start telling the good stories...althought none of mine involve aquatic athletes, fungi originating in cow poop, or root vegetables.

...oh, and if you Rice folks think your college system is so much different, it's really not. You guys are just as f*****g nuts as the Greeks are...with far fewer rules to constrain your mischief.

RE: OT: Greek Life
Old Dominion University Pi Kappa Phi, Gamma Beta Chapter. Initiated in 1985.

Chapter since disbanded, but is back on campus for 2012 fall semester. Very excited.

Had a guy that, after losing a "quarters" contest to competing fraternity on a midweek night, decided that lighting the tennis court nets on fire was a good idea. When campus police responded to his feeble attempts at tennis arson, he decided to run, and ended up underneath an ODU facilities services truck in an attempt to elude the police. Unfortunately, he passed out.

THe next morning, an unaware facilities worker got into his truck and placed it into gear. THe axle ran over my fraternity brother, causing a deep laceration. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks.

From that point forward, my fraternity brother was affectionately known as "SpeedBump". This name has endured into its 3rd decade, with no letup in sight.
