They're going to need it. There won't be ANY new updates to the stadium outside of private dollars...period. Also, don't expect any increase in seating capacity for at least another decade (unless we get into the American sooner, if ever). Recent stadium upgrades were way over budget, current season tickets are way down, current FB HC has way too much left in contract to buy out, university budgets are shrinking....trust me, without private donations, tight times are ahead across the board.

I haven’t heard that. How much is way over budget?

Stop being so negative. !!! This has all been said before and people are tired of all the pessimism. Thanks for reinforcing that message. Some people just don't get the fact that if you want to be big time you will have to triple you ODAF giving and that might not even be enough. My hope is they can cobble enough money to build the North EZ including moving the scoreboard and add some suites. The rest is a pipe dream.

No negativity intended. The 4 items I listed are objective facts. (1) The price of the stadium was more than what was raised, with athletics having to find more money over the next few years (if not longer) to pay it back. (2) Season ticket sales are down, so therefore less revenue is being generated than I know athletics & the university were planning/hoping for. (3) BW has more $$$ left his contract than Athletics is willing to buy out. Short of something "off the field" happening, he will still be here to coach the 2020 season, even if they go winless the remainder of the season. (4) ODU budgets are getting smaller, and the university is shrinking it's contribution towards athletics. With #4 combined with #1 & 2 (not even addressing the additional $$ now required to fund volleyball), thin times are coming unless it comes from private funding.

Ticket sales will rise if we start winning again. I would think if the stadium went way over budget that would have been in the news, but OK. My question is why is it only ODU that ever seems to deal with this stuff? VCU can have elegant practice faciliities, beautiful new buildings etc, JMU can have a beautiful new arena and 3/4 of a fabulous football stadium. VT & UVA get anything they want (and did even before massive media money windfalls). ODU needs to get someone on staff that knows how to get money out of Richmond and if needed raise the dang fees. Everyone else does. The "cheap thing" is getting old when our competition doesnt seem to have these same issues. We do so much more with less, imagine what ODU could accomplish with equal resources.

Edit: or cut some non-rev sports. Sorry.

No one said ODU is the only school suffering from this, if indeed it is. I'm impressed with the new buildings we're putting up, and there's plenty of construction. IMO. We just finished a 67.5 or 71 mil stadium in record time and are on the cusp of completing a $40m ODAF campaign. From what I read here, your glass seems perpetually half empty.

The relations between specific people in the media and ODU is pretty strong, and there is a good non spoken agreement on what gets put out there with some internal affairs. Nothing was mentioned in news regarding the former COO denying a proposal to double the size of the basketball practice facility (that athletics wanted to do, and had the funding plan to allow for it), solely to expedite the building timeline.

VCU does have a great basketball facility. ODU would have one too if we just took the $65+ million and put it in that instead of the stadium. JMU is playing catchup, as the Ted is pretty top-of-the-line for it's capacity. As for UVA/VT, we can't compare with anything with P5 schools.

As for cutting non-rev sports...unfortunately, that has to still be on the table if they want to continue to build the rev sports. The Gonzagas and Nevadas aren't good in most sports..but they choose to fund the sports they want to promote.

To me, this is the problem. We are not budget poor. We do better than the vast majority of non P5 schools and nearly all of our conference mates in terms of Athletics budget. The question is whether or not it is being allocated correctly.

The feat that Ballard pulled off is amazing, and I believe everyone on here is in agreement to that. Yes, ODAF is about to complete their $40mil campaign, and it was publicized as Broderick "announced a fundraising initiative" for ODU in 2017. This was essentially his announcement that Athletics has to now start being self-sufficient. Less and less money from the University will be going towards Athletics. This is due, in part, of the Cox bill, but it's also due to the belief of Broderick & BOV that any increase in status/prominence/etc. for Athletics needs to be done by Athletics. Once ODAF passes the $40mil mark, they will assuredly announce future "campaigns" as these funds are a significant % of the yearly Athletics budget, not just capital projects.

Absolutely. I feel ODU has maxed itself out by focusing on all sports "across the board." If people truly want to be more competitive in football & basketball (and our budget isn't growing anytime soon), then those funds need to be taken away from somewhere.

You nailed it. Our athletic budget leads CUSA and is on par for the AAC. Football and basketball just doesn't get the priority it does at other schools.

Correct. A lot of folks waited too long for the first one and reached out for another one. Personally, I hope they just keep it open forever. It would be cool if we could end up with something like the senior walk at the University of Arkansas.

ODAF Donations
When the stadium opened
I was a little disappointed in the number of bricks sold.
Did not even fill up the small area.
This is a great way to support the school and have something on campus for along time.
Really hope people take advantage of this.

Same here. I rushed to order mine fully expecting space to run out. On opening night was really shocked at how few bought bricks. I guess that worked out for me because I got a pimp spot beside Broderick's brick, so easy to find. :)

Same here. I also figured they would run out of space and ordered mine quickly. They should have been selling bricks as early as after the bowl win though. Seems like it was a last minute after thought.

RE: ODAF Donations
Got a letter on Saturday from ODAF that says they have completed fundraising for the $40 million capital campaign. They also mentioned they raised over $13 mil in 2019.

As for 2020, they mention sport specific funds that we can select when donating. Many of us are well aware of their goal to raise $5mil for football ($2.5mil is already raised). But the letter also mentions a $2mil goal for bball and that has already raised $1mil.
