Ha I was thinking of posting the same thing right after it happened. Bruce hits into the DP and Thom goes "You've GOT to be kidding me." Doesn't describe the play at all. Since it's the third out of the inning, normally you'd hear something like "that ends the 8th, Braves coming up" or something similarly innocuous. Thom doesn't say a word. Just "You've GOT to be kidding me," ten seconds of awkward silence, and commercial break.

Fu(king putz.

Meanwhile, this season is starting to resemble 2010 in terms of big-picture trending. Start out the season in a general malaise, STL gets way out in front iirc, then they start showing signs of life, then (was it in June?) they string together a nice long winning streak, win a bunch of series' in a row, get back into it, and off they go. Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 have already been realized.

After he said that, you could definitely hear him hit the mic or throw his headphones or something like that. Dude is completely unprofessional, I get that he is a fan, but he has to control it while getting paid to be a broadcaster. Add to that the crap like bringing his kids into the box etc, it drives me crazy that he can do whatever the hell he wants. Love it when Welsh gives him ****. He always says stuff about Thom living in a gated community and you can tell Thom gets annoyed by it. He can dish it , but can't take it at all.

He's annoying, but I prefer him. I prefer Kelch the most. Brennamenn just seems awkward with either Welsh or Cowboy. Probably because he acts likes he knows more than those guys even though I'd be shocked if he ever actually even played T Ball.

Really wish Hoard would have gotten a shot.

I actually liked George Grande's energy. Who I couldn't stand was Paul Keels. So glad he was only brought in on a 1 year experiment.

Agree about Keels. Couldn't stand him announcing baseball. Just wasn't his thing.

I really like the whole group of announcers the Reds have now. I think Brantley has really brought Marty back to life. Marty really likes Jeff, and the pair together well. Brantley is probably my favorite. I like Kelch cause he's Mr. Statistic guy, and I like that. I think his fit in well too. Welsh is always solid. Thom is solid but occasionally annoys me because he seems to try and stir controversies up that aren't always there. Kind of makes a big deal about nothing at times. And yeah, I didn't like how he said "are you kidding me" when Bruce grounded into the double play in the 8th. Seemed unprofessional. And I'm just a so-so fan of Bruce.

I really hope Hoard gets a chance when they have the next opening. I think he's one of the best announcers I've heard in my life.

Reds lineup vs. Braves

05/24/12 at 3:34pm
Written by jfay

Reds lineup vs Braves:

Zack Cozart SS
Drew Stubbs CF
Joey Votto 1B
Brandon Phillips 2B
Jay Bruce RF
Chris Heisey LF
Todd Frazier 3B
Devin Mesoraco C
Homer Bailey P

vs. RH Randall Delgado (2-4, 4.26).

The Reds have allowed 12 runs during the five-game winning streak. That’s particularly impressive against the Yankees and the Braves.

The Reds have not swept the Braves in a four-game series since April 13-16, 1990, in Atlanta. The Reds’ last four-game sweep of the Braves in Cincinnati was April 9-13, 1980.

Geez. Homer has pitched really well tonight. But as usual, he seems to lose focus momentarily. He hung a fastball to the pitcher for a single. And then hung another one too high for Bourn to crank out. Reds offense is asleep tonight.

Remember when people were making a big deal about the Reds losing a couple of games early in the year? This is a really good Reds team. It just shows how little people should worry about a couple of games early.

Winning 6 games is nice, winning 4 against a real good Braves team is very nice.

More impressive is that they have done so without much help from Bruce or Votto.

Masset passes test
05/24/12 at 5:17pm by jfay

Right-hander Nick Masset, who’s been on the disabled list all year with a sore shoulder, passed a big test today. He threw extensively for the first time since late March.

“I felt about as good as you can for the first day,” Masset said. “I hadn’t thrown in two months. It’s a situation like you’re starting to throw again after the offseason — three months off, whatever. You’ve got to get the rust out. Overall, I felt good. I thought the ball was coming out OK.

“There was a little something (as far as pain). I knew that there was going to be a little something going into it today. But I think it went well for the first day.”

Reds manager Dusty Baker watched the session. Masset threw 30 pitches from 60 feet. He will continue to throw every day from 60 feet.

“He looked pretty good for his first time throwing the ball,” Baker said. “He felt a little something, which is natural. He’s slated to throw again tomorrow. He’s slated for 30 throws. . . He got a little better as he went on. The real test is the third day.”

Masset had to shut it down after only five throws when he tried to resume throwing in late April.

“I’m about as encouraged as I could be, throwing the first day,” Masset said. “We’re still a long ways away. I try to stay positive, work as hard as I can in the training room, hope all that training and strengthening turns into good results.”

Masset is walking a fine line.

“You try not to overdo, try not to under-do it,” he said. “You want to get something out of it. Believe it or not, when you throw you build strength. The more you throw, the more strength you build. Hopefully, I’ll build up to 90 feet, 120 feet, get up to 200 feet. Hopefully, things will work out from there.”

Saturday: Rockies at Reds with Thom and Mitch Williams in the booth (7:15 p.m.).

June 2 : Reds at Astros with Thom and Tom Verducci (7:15 p.m.),

June 16: Reds at New York Mets with Thom and Sean Casey (7:15 p.m.). This game airs a week before Casey’s Reds Hall of Fame induction at GABP.

All three Fox prime-time games will air on Channels 19 and 45 here.

Thom also did the Cubs-White Sox game last Saturday for Fox’s premiere of “Baseball Night in America.”

ESPN last week discovered the Reds, adding the June 10 Tigers at Reds game to the “Sunday Night Baseball” lineup. The 1 p.m. game has been moved to 8 p.m. for ESPN’s national telecast. ESPN also will air the Cardinals at Reds July 15 on “Sunday Night Baseball.”

Mesoraco's slam sends Reds over Braves 6-3

Rookie catcher Devin Mesoraco capped a series full of homers with his first career grand slam on Thursday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

The Reds completed their first four-game sweep of the Braves in Cincinnati since 1980 at Riverfront Stadium. They've won six straight, their longest winning streak since August 2010 when they started their push toward the NL Central title.

The teams combined for 16 homers - 13 solo shots - accounting for 21 of the 24 runs in the series.

Mesoraco connected off Kris Medlen, who relieved Randall Delgado (2-5) with the bases loaded in the sixth. Drew Stubbs added a solo shot for Cincinnati.

Homer Bailey (3-3) gave up four hits in six innings, including Michael Bourn's two-run homer.

Reds 6, Braves 3: Devin Mesoraco hit his first career grand slam homer to help host Cincinnati complete a four-game sweep of Atlanta.

Mesoraco’s homer off Kris Medlen in the sixth inning slid inside the left-field foul pole to give the Reds a 5-2 lead as Cincinnati won its season-best sixth consecutive game and Atlanta matched a season-worst four-game losing skid.

Homer Bailey (3-3) gave up just two runs and four hits in six innings as the Reds registered their first four-game home sweep of the Braves since 1980.

Logan Ondrusek allowed two hits in the ninth but retired Juan Francisco on a game-ending double play for his second save.

Atlanta had a 2-1 lead after Michael Bourn hit a two-run homer off Bailey in the fifth.

Cincinnati loaded the bases with one out in the sixth against Randall Delgado (2-5) before Mesoraco hit his game-changing homer on a 2-0 pitch from Medlen.

Francisco homered in the seventh to get the Braves back within 5-3 before Drew Stubbs hit his third homer of the series in the bottom of the inning.

Delgado was charged with four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

RE: Reds vs Braves
Braves slammed and swept at Cincinnati

By David O'Brien

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

CINCINNATI – Randall Delgado had already given up two grand slams this season, and the Braves weren’t going to risk him giving up a third at the most homer-friendly ballpark in the National League.

So after the Cincinnati Reds loaded the bases against Delgado with one out in the sixth inning Thursday, the Braves brought in Kris Medlen to face Devin Mesoraco. To say the move backfired would be a major understatement.

Mesoraco crushed the third pitch Medlen threw, driving it into the second deck of the left-field seats for a grand slam that sent the Reds to a 6-3 win that gave them a four-game series sweep of the Braves at Great American Ball Park, their first over Atlanta in more than 20 years.

The last time the Braves were swept in a four-game series was in April 2009 at St. Louis, and the last time they were swept in a four-game series by the Reds was in April 1990 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

After Juan Francisco hit his second home run of the series for the Braves in the seventh inning, Drew Stubbs added leadoff homer off struggling reliever Jonny Venters in the bottom of the seventh to add to the Reds' lead.

The Braves have lost five of their past six games and seven of 11, and their pitchers gave up 10 home runs in four games against the streaking Reds, who have won a season-high six in a row.

Michael Bourn hit his third home run of the series for the Braves, a two-run shot in the fifth inning that put them ahead 2-1. But the lead, the game and the series went up in flames in the bottom of the sixth, when Mesoraco tore into a 2-and-0 Medlen pitch for the 16th homer off Braves relievers this season, tied for the National League high.

Delgado (2-5) pitched well for the first five innings, allowing six hits, one walk and one run in that period. But he ran into a familiar source of trouble in the sixth – the leadoff walk. Brandon Phillips walked to start the inning, and Chris Heisey hit a one-run single to put runners on the corners.

After a mound conversation with the entire infield and pitching coach Roger McDowell, Delgado walked Todd Frazier to load the bases.

That was enough for manager Fredi Gonzalez, who brought in Medlen. The right-hander hadn’t given up a homer this season and had a 1.83 ERA in his past 15 appearances before Thursday, when he fell behind in the count and left a 91-mph fastball over the middle of the plate. Mesoraco hammered it for his fifth homer this season and first major league grand slam.

The Braves were last swept in a four-game series in Cincinnati in 1980, but they’ve had plenty of frustrations in the Reds’ home park in recent years. The Braves have won just one of eight series at Great American Ball Park in the past seven seasons, and fell to 7-19 in that period at the stadium. They were swept in a three-game series in Cincinnati in 2009.

Bourn’s homer was his his fourth in his past 13 games, after he hit only 13 homers in the first 749 games of his career.

RE: Reds vs Braves
Braves quotes after Wednesday loss to Reds

11:39 pm May 23, 2012, by David O'Brien

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On whether that walk-off homer would’ve been a lazy flyout at Turner Field

“I don’t know about lazy, but it’s a flyball to deep right field [at Turner Field]. But the fences are there, they don’t move them back when we come to hit. It’s just one of those things. Hopefully we come out tomorrow and Delgado will give us a good outing and our bats will get going.”

On Hanson

“I thought he did great. Gave us six innings, Pastornicky leads off the seventh with a double, and we’ve got to try and take a shot [to win it] there with Chipper. Arredondo walked Chipper and it’s first and second with Bourney, who’s been swinging the bat well, and we get nothing there.

“But [Hanson] pitched great. Minimized the damage. It was a long inning, but we were going to run him back out there if he didn’t come up to hit. But once you get a man in scoring position, I think you’ve got to take a shot at it.”

On condition of Venters’ leg

“Jonny’s OK… Well, we’ll find out tomorrow. He got smoked pretty good. I say he’s OK, but we’ll find out tomorrow. It’s between the knee and the calf. We’ll see. Hopefully nothing is major and he’ll be ready to go.”

On O’Flaherty

“I thought O’Flaherty did a helluva job getting a groundball double play there with runners on first and third.”

Did you bring in O’Flaherty because Venters took that liner off his leg?

“It was one of those situations where I felt like putting Jonny out there to face Bruce after getting smoked in the leg would’ve been tough to do. We had O [O’Flaherty] ready to go, and that’s the reason I did it.”

Had C. Martinez do something he did with mixed results few times last year, last inning of a tie game

“Well, it’s a situation with the closer-on-the-road issue and stuff, and I just think it’s one of those things. I thought that where their lineup was, we could go through that inning, and it just didn’t materialize.”

**TOMMY HANSON

On the game and his performance

“Tough loss. But there’s only so much you can do. We’re out there battling and it just didn’t work out. It kind of sucks to see that ball go in the first row and have that be the way the game is determined. But that’s the ballpark we’re playing in and you’ve got to deal with it. I felt like our offense was aggressive, and you’ve got to make quality pitches from the get-go. I felt like I did that for the most part. I’m pleased with how I did.”

On the roll you were on until the sixth

“I had all my pitches going again and I was locating. When I do that, I feel like I’m going to have a good game. In the sixth that first-pitch curveball was up a little bit, and the second guy punched that ball in between first and second. I’m not going to beat myself up over that. The 0-2 count to Phillips, then I walked him – I’ve got to do a better job with that. And then I did my best to get out of it and kept making quality pitches.

“I still felt good to go out in the seventh, but we needed to get Chipper in there and try to get Tyler in.”

Nearly got inning-ending double-play ball on Bruce grounder that drove in tying run

“I just tried to get over there [for the throw]. I didn’t even touch the bag; I don’t know how close I was. I just tried to go over there. That’s a tough play. If we could have got that it would have been huge, but that’s a tough play.”

On his road success (two runs or fewer in every road start)

“I’m definitely doing better on the road, but I don’t know what the cause of it is. I do the same thing every start, come up with a gameplan and try to execute it. I’ve just been doing a little bit better on the road than I have at home.”

On allowing just one run in the small ballpark

“Yeah, it’s good. Especially seeing the balls they hit off Beachy yesterday and the one that won it [tonight]. It’s a tough place to pitch. I feel like I definitely kept our team in the game, and that’s my job. So I’m definitely happy with that.”

**DAVID ROSS

On Hanson’s performance

“He put us on his back tonight, and we didn’t help him out. He threw great. That’s as good as I’ve seen him pitch in a while. He was getting all his breaking stuff over, moving the ball in and out really well. He did a good job. It was exactly what we needed from him today, was to come out and pitch like that.

“We didn’t score any runs. We’re just catching a team that’s doing a pretty good job right now. They’re playing good baseball. They’ve got a lot of confidence and kind of on a roll, and we’re at the back end of this road trip and just kind of can’t finish this thing off. So hopefully we’ll come back tomorrow and play well, and get out of this road trip.”

Way you played for six weeks, might’ve have scored 12 runs a game in this ballpark

“Yeah, I know. And we played really good teams. I think it’s a mixture of this team is playing really good baseball right now, getting timely hits. We’ve kept Votto and Bruce, for the most part, at bay. Which, coming in, that’s kind of one of your goals. Brandon Phillips had a nice night last night, but for the most part we’ve kept their big bats at bay and the guys that are hurting us are their other guys. But that’s what good teams do, they pick each other up.

“They’ve got a lot of confidence, they’re playing well right now, and we’re just in a little bit of a lull. We’re too good a team not to stay in here and our pitching’s really good, so we’ll be fine. But it’s a real frustrating loss when a guy goes out and pitches like that. Beachy actually pitched a really good game yesterday, better than the results showed. Hopefully Randall comes out and gives us a good outing tomorrow and hopefully we score some runs for him.

“We’ve got some guys banged up. Guys are dropping like flies around here. We’ve just got to keep our heads up, and the B squad’s got to pick up the A squad. We’ve got a long way to go.”

** MICHAEL BOURN

On the game and the Reds winning again

“They’re a good team, man. They fight to the end. They’ve got good pitching, good offense, good defense. They’re playing us tough.

“We haven’t been hitting like we normally have, but our pitchers have been holding us [in games], so some kind of way we’ve got to find a way to scrap some runs across.”

On losing on a homer to the first row of small park

“That’s tough. But I seen when he hit it that he got some backspin on it instead of topspin. I seen that backspin and I said, uhh, it’s going to get out.”

On team’s hitting slump

“Through a whole season, this time is going to come. I don’t care what team it is. You can go look at the greatest team that ever played this game, at some point in the season they’re going to go through a rut. Actually Walk [hitting coach Greg Walker] told us about that at spring training. I remember him saying it at a meeting we had.

“But you’ve just got to find a way out of it. That’s how it is. Our pitchers have been pitching great. As far as hitting, we’ve just been in a rut. Some balls we hit, we’re hitting right at ‘em. They’re making diving plays, the ball finds them. It happens. But we’ll be back tomorrow, I can promise you that.”

**CHIPPER JONES

On his pinch-hit at-bat, looking for anything close to hit?

“Well, I don’t want to make an out in that situation. I’ve got to wait for a pitch. He threw me five splits and I’m sure they told him with the base open to be careful. I got five splits. He threw me one good one and four bad ones. I mean, if he leaves one up enough over the outside corner, I’ve got a great hole to hit through, which is kind of what I was thinking, between short and third, with them playing me up the middle. And I just didn’t get anything.”

On the 0-3 start to series

“The Reds have caught us at a good time – a bad time for us. I’m out of the lineup, Mac’s sick, Freddie’s having trouble with his eyes. You know, we just can’t put anything together offensively right now.”

On Hanson

“Tommy threw great. He kept the ballpark, which is something we haven’t done in this very cozy place. But you hate to waste efforts like that. You’ve got to put more together early in the game to give yourself a cushion. No lead’s safe here. But Tommy threw a great game.”
