Because running as a third party for any office higher than mayor is a thankless, lonely, sure-lose proposition. There is not a chance in the world that either would have gotten elected except as Republicans.

Conversely, the Republicans can really use the support of libertarian-leaning voters whom represent probably a solid 20-30% of their support, depending on how strictly one defines 'libertarian-leaning'. Both parties are big tents with diverse interests. If labor unions and environmentalists can form a party with little more in common than 'screw the industrialists!', there is no reason why libertarians and neocons can't form a party. Republicans probably have an easier time of keeping party unity, since 'Let the states decide!' is an acceptable answer to almost any question.

The question is....Why are the others still Republicans. They are among only a handful that hold the Republican ideals.
