that's probably one of the least populated areas in the nation; no wonder that there aren't any FBS schools there

It's still amazing that even with all the bball schools that there is still none in that area. That's a giant chunk of emptiness lol.

maybe one of the Dakota teams can make the jump
Montana is pretty much dead in the water due to some recent scandals involving their football program
don't know that much about Montana State but doubt they could make the jump

RE: New Map
Looking at the map you can see why WAC had problems reloading with f/b member schools. If they survive it will not be as a f/b conference.

but some of the most successful FCS schools are located in that area
if the WAC could have enticed them to move up, the conference would have been safe

The WAC could have some real options if the group of Montana, MSU, UND, NDSU, USD and SDSU all decided to go to FBS together as a package

RE: New Map
The map is a great visual and should provide insight into why 4 conferences of 16 will not be the end game in all of this. As you can see from the map, the PAC has zero interest in any of the other FBS schools in their footprint for expansion beyond 12. The only way the PAC expands is if it raids the Big12. Mathematically 4 conferences of 16 is doable and you can shuffle enough schools between the ACC, Big12 and Big East to cobble together a 4th conference after the assumption that the PAC, B1G and SEC moves to 16. To do that you will destroy 3 current "BCS" conferences to make it happen. Way too much political fallout would ensue to make it happen. The 4 by 16 hypothesis is untenable IMO.

The locations are approximate since the logos are right next to rather than right on their hometowns.

Looks like a good area for a new bowl game. The Dust Bowl.
Seriously, that picture says a lot. Why the big empty swath in the middle of the country?

Because maybe 10 people live in that entire region.

Again, that's the great plains.
Wheat, cotton and corn farms and cattle ranches as far as the eye can see but not a lot of people.

Nobody lives in Nebraska and Kansas but there's 1 in Nebraska and 2 in Kansas. Just seems like the Dakotas or Montana would have come up with at least 1 FBS team.

RE: New Map
Great map.
1) Looking at New England, it appears insane that UConn & BC don't play each other.
2) It would be great if you could do the conferences by themselves. I don't know what we'd do with them, but it would be really cool (especially if we could add BYU, Air Force, and Fresno to the Big East).
3) It appears Texas leads the way with 12 schools. At this rate, Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin will be 1-A pretty soon.

This map shows why many ECU fans are not happy about the new CUSA. It puts NC with tightest density of major college football schools in the nation to have to compete with for recruiting.

Guess you didn't look at Ohio (8), Lower Michigan (5) and East Texas (10). I'd say 5 in Alabama trumps 6 in NC for density as well.

It makes sense though if you think about history. When college football was really growing and becoming popular schools joining the bigger leagues tended towards higher populations or the largest schools. Those states had neither really at the time. Places like Kansas are small but they had a significant time advantage for their schools.
