RE: Liberty moving up
If they move up, I suspect it will be as an independent. I'm not sure how many FBS conferences would be willing to take on that kind of political powder keg.

RE: Liberty moving up
I don't think you can move to FBS as an indy anymore. Don't quote me on that but I think so many FCS teams were doing it that the NCAA stopped it for awhile.
Someone will take them, probably the MAC, along with someone else (App St). The Sun Belt wants App, but App doesn't really want them (which is dumb on App's part), but Liberty brings fans, money and attention to a conference. There's no such thing as bad publicity, and if an invite for them caused a political/religious explosion especially for a smaller FBS conference then great.

RE: Liberty moving up
Liberty will get an invite from the WAC. The WAC is in real trouble . . . so that may be the Flames ticket to D-1.

This should anger a few people on here:
It seems that having football in the Big South Conference isn't a bad way to go . . . especially if it leads to bigger things.

RE: Liberty moving up
It shouldn't though. As a startup, Coastal has used the Big South to log wins early as a program. Liberty is just a different animal entirely. Their online degree program is massive, and all of those students pay the same fees as those on campus. They even get a nice little card in the mail that gives them free admission to sporting events. The WAC will go away, and most likely the MWC will take those teams just to give themselves more teams.

I agree with Lover, Liberty is just a different case. They're in the Big South with a $19.5 million budget. They spend over $5 million on football. Financially they are nothing like the rest of the Big South.

I really think The MAC takes them. They bring money and attention.

1985. Only team the Bucs don't lose to is Liberty. They tie 'em and finish 0-10-1.

Now Liberty is going FBS, and ETSU is without a team.

It didn't have to be this way, folks.

Liberty (like what they stand for or not) is a religious school with a well defined focus. They clearly understand the role of athletics and how important it is to the visibility of an institution. They could buy a lot of Bibles with $19.5M, yet they believe for some odd reason that sports teams put them in a position to better deliver their message.

That thumping sound you hear, is the beating of that poor poor horse.

Well in actuality, Falwell was sports obsessed and pretty much king at the university, so he spent money on whatever he liked. He spared no expense for all programs. It's worth noting that they spent money on everything, not just football and basketball. Most of their facilities are less than ten years old. They are more than prepared for a jump up. The university also has assets of over a billion dollars. That helps.

Liberty is defiantly doing things right from an athletic standpoint. Their facilities are top notch for a school that size, both their basketball arena and football stadium is better than anything ETSU has ever had and they are both currently being upgraded. I read their football stadium will seat 30,000 by 2015.

I don't care for Falwell whatsoever but at least he has vision for his school's athletic teams. It sucks seeing schools, like Liberty that we used to beat up on, pass us.

Thanks Paulie and Davie 03-nutkick

Jerry Falwell, Jr. is running things over there now and he is just as bad in my opinion.

Or it could be that Liberty has one of the larger online degree programs in the United States, and those students pay the same fees as those on campus.
