RE: UC basketball trying to improve schedule
Thought this New Mmex game was for 2013 and 2014 home and home not 2012?

I thought that too from the wording of Andy Katz's blurb but I think it begins for the 2012-13 season, which makes UC's non-conference SOS among the strongest in the past few years.

"2. Cronin is attempting to upgrade his schedule and has secured a top-25 home-and-home series, which isn’t easy in this era of schools looking for more neutral-site non-conference games. Cronin and New Mexico coach Steve Alford said they will play a home-and-home series next season, to start in Cincinnati. The Bearcats will visit the Pit the following season."

I don't know, seems pretty clear to me. Maybe he should have said this upcoming season?

That's where I was confused. At this time of year next season could easily mean 2012-13 as much as 2013-14.

New Mexico game will be at home this season according to Gobearcats.com; however, no news on the SEC game.

I like the schedule but please no sub 300 rpi teams and only one or two sub 200 teams. With the right buy games UC will have a top 25 SOS and won't need 11 or 12 wins conference wins to get a solid seed in the tournament next season. If the Cats do well out of league, 11 or 12 conference wins will equal a five seed or better.

Xavier
New Mexico
Iowa State
Oregon/UNLV <-- UC will play one of these teams whether or not they beat Iowa State right?
Unnamed opponent in Big East-SEC challenge
Wright State

To me, if the rest of UC's OOC schedule would be the same as last year and with those teams above the schedule as a whole is still much stronger.

Great news.

Playing at The Pit is going to be tough. Very few BCS teams are willing to play there and the ones that do take on the challenge usually aren't very good (Texas Tech, Arizona St.). There are a number of likely tournament teams in the OOC schedule next year. Well done.

Add Marshall in Charleston as well.

18 Big East games
13 non-conference games??

non-conference games.
Three of those games are at home. (Wright, SEC Team, New Mexico)
Four on nuetral sites/road games (Xavier, Marshall, two games in Vegas)
Cats would need six buy games to get to 18 home games.

UC had seven buy games last season which doesn't include Miami in a very down year. SOS is going to be better just based on the fact there a more higher tier games than buy games.

If we can keep XU at home with New Mexico and add a mid level SEC team to be named later and it will be much improved ...lose XU to downtown and it still is improved, but still sucks!

Actually the RPI gives you more credit for games at neutral sites than home games, so being on the river should help the RPI. I would be very disappointed if we lost to the Gangstateers as they really don't have much coming back this season.

I've always wondered: why don't we play Dayton every year? They're a quality OOC game that we'd likely win most years, and it would almost certainly sell out every year.

Good question. I always loved that game when I was in school. Dayton and Louisville were the must see games back then.

RE: UC basketball trying to improve schedule
We are something like 14-1 against Dayton over the past 15 years or so. That is not a rivalry.
Back in the GMWC days Dayton was an absolute doormat, routinely racking up 4-5 wins a season.
They have gotten better over the last several years, but even two years ago when they were expected to be"very good" for a Dayton team, we beat them as bad as we have beaten any team in the Mick era when we played them down town.

I would look at it as somewhat like the Miami game, nice for the regional aspect, but not something that would usually be expected to help our strength of schedule, help us prepare for BEast play, and would be a huge knock on us if we ever lost a game to them.

Maybe replace one of the multidirectional teams from the schedule with Dayton on a 2-at-Cincy / 1-at-Dayton series...?

RE: UC basketball trying to improve schedule
Cincinnati is going to have a decent Non-conference schedule.

Home (last years RPI):
Jacksonville State (216)
Northern Arizona (337)
Campbell (206)
NC A&T (289)
New Mexico (27)
Wright State (224)
Big East/SEC Challenge team

Neutral (RPI):
Iowa State (33)
Oregon (67)/ UNLV (21)
Xavier (41)
Marshall (43)

That could potentially be 4-5 top 50 RPI games in the non conference. UNLV will be a top 10/15 team, New Mexico will probably be in the top 25 as well.

The great thing about Dayton is that no matter how bad they are, they still fill their arena and the local television market still watches them.

Plus, there are a lot of UC grads up here in God's Country just north of Dayton. I am an hour north of Dayton and my daughter's high school class of 67 has 10 members attending UC next year.

Worst game I ever attended. I could tell from the beginning that UC's players were so bummed about being snubbed for the tourney that they didn't care about playing at all. It was pathetic.

I think our guys were so ticked at having that game handed to them that they ran up the score the next year when we played them (and doubled them up, 68-34.

RE: UC basketball trying to improve schedule
I just heard that Creighton and Murray State are looking to upgrade their schedules as well. Those would be good opponents to get. Creighton is always good, and would be respectable even if we lost to them. Murray State has the Cronin connection, and is a local game. I'd think a 3 for 1 would with them would be great, and a good upgrade of the schedule.
