Isn't UNC already on probation, or just got off of probation?

They ARE on probation (3 years IIRC). However, it seems admission of new violations keep coming out after the fact...

It'll be interesting. I'm not going to say that the NCAA would drop the "Death Penalty" but this is something worth paying attention to.

To be clear, I neither expect nor want the death penalty for UNC. However, so far they've gotten what amounts to a slap on the wrist in football and no punishment at all in basketball.

I ask myself why I think UNC deserves additional punishment and the answer I come up with is because they think they are better than the rest of the ACC... and I'd like to see them humbled just a bit. Not punitive, just something to move them to repentance (hopefully). I think that's also why folks want to see Penn St's football program punished - because it does not appear to be repentant yet.

WTF is up the the academic side of UNC?
Drug smuggling’ Brit duped in fake online romance with model

Quote: A BRITISH scientist arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling in Argentina says he is the victim of a honey trap after being duped into believing he was starting a new life with a stunning Czech glamour model.

Cops in Buenos Aires arrested Professor Paul Frampton after it was alleged that two kilos of cocaine were found in a suitcase he was carrying.

But the Oxford University graduate said he believed the bag was owned by Denise Milani - an underwear model.

Professor Frampton says he believes the mafia tricked him into carrying the drugs by posing as Miss Milani on an online dating site.

There is no suggestion the model had any involvement in the drugs smuggling plot - or knew the mafia was allegedly using her identity.

The 68-year-old professor said he had been exchanging messages with someone he thought was the model - who won the Miss Bikini World title in 2007 - on a dating website.

Professor Frampton agreed to meet his online 'girlfriend' in Bolivia before flying back to the US to start a new life with her.

But when no one turned up after ten days he claims he was persuaded to travel to Argentina to catch up with her there instead.

Despite being stood up a second time, the professor - who was teaching at North Carolina University - says he agreed to carry a case he was told belonged to the model to Brussels.

He was then arrested days later and has languished in jail for six months.

I have to wonder just how much influence Chapel Hill will have at ACC meetings when both the football and basketball teams are on probation? 05-stirthepot

UNC officials said Monday that the transcript appears to be of a “former student” but said they could say nothing more because student records are protected under federal law.

Not well versed on the privacy laws re: transcripts, and if UNC was stupid enough to use his actual transcript without scrubbing his name then shame on them, but how is CBS and others allowed to freely post that same transcript without repercussions? Seems like they are openly flaunting their disregard for those same laws that UNC may have broken.

Again, that's if Peppers had not waived his rights to keep his transcript private.

Story from The Big Lead

What had happened was...

Quote:North Carolina has been embroiled in an athletic academic scandal for a couple years, and this summer, it seems to be exploding. Over the weekend, the News & Observer published an academic transcript that UNC insisted was fake. But it turns out the transcript was real, and it belonged to former star Julius Peppers.

An NC State message board unearthed the screw up. Even though the school fixed the web screw up this morning, and you can’t find the transcripts online … we’ve got the screen grabs below for you to judge for yourself.

Quote:“This,” one BCS athletic director told me Monday, “is Pandora’s Box.”

And an ironic kick in the rear for the man who talked tough while his kingdom was crumbling around him. Guess what, Mr. Emmert?

You’re gonna need a bigger stick.

When he announced crippling sanctions against Penn State, when he stuck the governing body’s nose in a legal action, Emmert made it clear that he alone had been given power to ignore due process and NCAA bylaws to protect “the foundation of amateur sports.”

And believe it or not, even Gregg Doyel has chimed in:

Best conclusion to a news article ever:

Quote:It's time for the NCAA to start digging. In the meantime, North Carolina should get a head start on some of its own chores.

For starters? There are some banners at the Smith Center that need to come down.

It seems to be a loop hole. How good of a loop hole remains to be seen. The law says the school can't give out the info without the students permission. It doesn't say anything about what a 3rd party can do with the info. Since the info was allegedly posted on the public side of UNCs system it would be hard to say it was stolen.

Man, I bet Doyel went through an entire box of Kleenex writing that article. Total 180 degree turn for what had been one of the biggest sheep homers in the media.

RE: UNC Academic scandal...
BIG PICTURE QUESTIONS:
1) How does this affect the balance of power in the ACC board room? Will the other members of the "UNC Mafia" abandon the Heels?
2) Assuming UNC ends up getting more sanctions (and Miami hasn't even gotten any yet), how will this affect distribution of conference payout to the other 12 schools (if at all) - remember, Penn St is forfeiting their share of bowl money (but keeping the TV money, IIRC)
3) Finally, if it's determined that some UNC athletes weren't really students at all, could this affect tax exempt status? If there is a real threat of that happening, what steps will UNC / ACC / NCAA take to head off that threat?
