No - I think next up is UTEP to the MWC. That would leave C-USA at 12. They might stop there.

Highly doubt it. Don't think the merger/alliance is even happening, and if it's not happening they aren't paying that buyout to go.

ODU will announce about a year from now that they are upgrading, especially if both ODU and Charlotte are not allowed to begin conference play in 2014, which is the second year of their transition.

Only problem with that is they're going to be wanted for the other sports as well to join in 2013.

It sounds like an extra year of FCS independence is in Old Dominion's future, although with the changes in the Big South and CAA, perhaps the Big South would be willing to rent them the spot soon-to-be-vacated by Coastal Carolina, Liberty, or Stony Brook.

ODU plays CAA football. They will this fall regardless of what happens.

They will be ineligible for post-season, though, if they declared.

They will also be ineligible for any CAA post-season tourney (as would VCU/GMU), so they would have to get an at-large bid to make any NCAA championship.

that would be a mighty feeble CAA tourney this year.

My guess is that the MWC will wait and see if they lose any more schools when the Big East replaces Louisville (and maybe one more, but my guess is just UL), and then they'll visit the UTEP issue at that point.

If, say, AFA goes to BE football, and Boise and SDSU say, "No, no, a thousand times no, we're never ever coming back," then the MWC's path to 12 teams is adding UTEP, NMSU, and Idaho.

Charlotte's football team won't be in FBS by then, so CUSA would be short of the 12 needed for two divisions and a title game until Charlotte is ready, unless they add another school.

with the texas schools added, I don't see UTEP bouncing, especially to an even more weakened MWC...

Sadly this was a realistic scenario the second they announced they were starting football.

Honestly though, I don't think it was as lucky as it may have seemed. 4 months ago Charlotte's name had been dropped a few times. Mike hamrick mentioned On the radio that we were their first replacement choice. ECU had also mentioned the same. I really think it had a lot more to do with the fact that no one, not the press, not the fans, thought it was an actual realistic possibility. I can't count how many times people on this very board said there was no way it was happening.

However, if you take a look at what our administration was saying and doing since inception, you can see this was a carefully and meticulously planned idea. From the very beginning there was plans to expand the stadium to 40,000 without any demolition. We hired a BCS defensive coordinator as our head coach and a BCS offensive coordinator as our head assistant. There is already money allocated for 2014 for stadium expansion. We were "passed up" by multiple fcs confences due to the short nature of our stay.

A better analogy would be that the AD put on their poker faces, went all in, and won the pot. 04-rock

When Charlotte announced they were moving ahead with football, Charlotte also being a former CUSA member, along with CUSA expansion needs it was basically a perfect storm for them to come to CUSA.

The FCS to FBS reclassification deadline is June 1 two years before the September they begin FBS play. So if ODU waits until after June 1 to file, they won't start the two-year transitional phase until 2014 and won't be a full FBS member until 2016. Charlotte's plan is to be full FBS by 2015, so they plan to file before June 1 (if they haven't filed already).

Anyone who doesn't announce by June 1 probably won't announce until December at the earliest, since you become ineligible for postseason the moment you make the announcement. Meaning you get three seasons without a postseason instead of two if you announce between June and November.

RE: C-USA offical
Might not be a bad move for CUSA to bring in VCU to pair with ODU...go for the 14 football + 2 non football setup. In the west, bring maybe UALR to form two 8 team divisions.

CUSA

West: Tulsa, N texas, Rice, UTSA, UTEP, LA tech, Tulane, UALR*

East: SMiss, UAB, FI,UNCC, ECU, VCU*, ODU, Marshall

* no football + maybe jump to 16/18 with missouri state and geo state or southern someday.
