That's the problem I see too, akron kid. The MAC has a tightly centered focus, and they'd need a new lens just to be able to see NDSU, much less invite them...

well, NDSU will be taking on MWC foe Colorado State on Sept 8 and NDSU will be favored in this game, bring a ton of fans and would easily be a .500 team in the MWC.

Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota
North Dakota State
South Dakota
South Dakota State
Wyoming

Wyoming will never leave the MWC for this group of schools and Idaho State doesn't have the facilities or the money to move to FBS. Nor can the state of Idaho support three FBS programs. The only realistically achievable configuration is the "Idaho Plan" that I posted above.

North Dakota \ North Dakota State
South Dakota \ South Dakota State
Denver (no football) \ New Mexico State
Montana \ Montana State
Boise State (except for football) or Utah Valley (possible future football) \ Portland State
Idaho \ Seattle (no football)

This is actually achievable if someone can convince the Dakota and Montana schools to leave the lesser programs from the Summit and Big Sky behind in favor of a league full of similar state universities. Wyoming is not leaving the MWC and San Diego State is not going to help.

Calling that Idaho Plan realistic is a stretch... More like " Idaho Pipe-Dream for the WAC."

Sure it's a pipe dream at this point, but that idea is probably the only somewhat realistic hope the WAC had of staying in the football business, and thus why they must have been attempting to sell the FCS schools on it.

You can't blame them for trying because it makes sense on the surface. Pull up six regional schools which are all big state universities, plus a Northwest urban school, and leave the smaller programs behind in the Big Sky.

That's the problem I see too, akron kid. The MAC has a tightly centered focus, and they'd need a new lens just to be able to see NDSU, much less invite them...

For what its worth, the distance between NDSU and Northern Illinois is only 100 miles further than Buffalo to UMass.

NDSU would be great for the MAC because they would never be a threat to head to CUSA and they pull from their own local recruiting base. The MAC needs to just stuff itself in the northern latitudes so nobody can get to it.

Are there any current MAC schools that are realistic MAC targets? They dont have overlapping footprints.

Ohio is probably you're #1 target out of the MAC.

-Only 90 minutes from Marshall and two schools already play yearly.

-Charlotte is only 4-5 hours from Ohio.

-Ohio has a 13,000 seat basketball arena.

-Ohio has won 46 football games since 2006, more than any MAC team.

-Ohio is 3-3 in NCAAs since 2005, best in the MAC.

-Ohio is located 45 minutes from Metro Columbus a prime football recruiting area and the state of OH in general is a great recruiting state.

There would also be consideration for Toledo and Akron but both of those schools are located much further away from CUSA's core.

If you were in Jackson, Mississippi....The Sun Belt or CUSA.
If you were in Indianapolis...The MAC

You are 1000 miles from the nearest Sun Belt school. We'll go with Appalaichian State, Georgia Southern, or Sam Houston State if we need a FCS call up.

You are over 600 miles from the nearest MAC school. They'll go with JMU or Delaware or even Northern Iowa (need to get rid of the UNIDOME though) if they need a new team.

Your team and program are great. Your geography sucks.

MAC needs a 14th team to even out the divisions and I've been pulling for NDSU for years. #37 in the latest sagarin polls. With Boise going to the BE, NDSU would be the top ranked non AQ team by Sagarin.

RE: NDSU to FBS, who wants us?
The MAC needs to wait things out. UMass may end up elsewhere, if there is further realignment, and then the league would have no need for a number 14. In addition, the "Idaho Plan" is still alive and well, but without the South Dakota schools.

Cal State Bakersfield (no football) \ Sacramento State
Portland State \ Seattle (no football)
Idaho \ Utah Valley (possible future football)
Montana \ Montana State
North Dakota \ North Dakota State
Denver (no football) \ New Mexico State

That layout still offers the WAC a path back into the football business. It would be 8 for football (9 if Utah Valley adds the sport) and 4 (or 3) more for basketball. Their desire to pursue this option until it can't be pursued anymore explains a lot.

They're a long ways away, but of course that didn't stop us from grabbing UMass. And UMass will jump to the Big East if they ever get the chance. I could see NDSU going to the Mountain West though, at some point.

It would make for a tough Western Division in football.

UMASS isn't that far from the eastern members and is a neighboring state. I also highly doubt that they are in any current Big East discussions. In my mind any situation where they take UMASS is likely a situation that they would take almost any MAC team (which would be the BIg East is desperate and UMASS just happens to be doing really well in the important sports).

NDSU is now 2 Time national champions and 28-2 in last 30 and has 5 NFL players on rosters and will likely get a 3rd straight title next year with 17 senior starters back.

NDSU is ready for FBS, took 18,000-20,000 to Texas for national championship game, SOLD OUT every game at the fargodome before the season even started.

NDSU needs the Mountain West or MAC to step up to the plate and offer NDSU.

UMASS is almost 400 miles from Buffalo. NDSU is about 600 miles from NIU. So they're slightly more centrally located. But not much. And why should all the added MAC teams be in the East, and not West side of the MAC? Also, any time you go after an East Coast team you risk losing them to the Big East or maybe even CUSA. NDSU probably isn't going anywhere, though I suppose the MWC might want them after they've been FBS for a while.

Success on the field doesn't get you an invite anywhere it seems. You have to have a market (Fargo is around 100k people). Plus you are all by yourselves up there. Like others have said, bring Montana and others with you and save the WAC if FBS is what you want. Or go independent. You are too far out of everyone's footprint.

NDSU's best chance might be if Idaho snags a football-only spot in the Sun Belt. Idaho and NDSU can be each other's permanent rivals, which cuts down travel for some of the remaining southern teams.

I think its time you come to terms with the fact that ndsu isn't going to move up anytime soon...

The stadium's small
The market's small
The university is isolated from all fbs conferences
