TopCoog Wrote:Jim..There might be at least a remote chance of that happening IF the schedule stayed at 11 games. IF it goes to 12 there is going to be a temptation for the big five to strengthen themselves when possible. That is really the danger for all three leagues, Big East CUSA and the MWC. Syracuse and West Virginia help the ACC if the schedule is 12 games every year. The ACC flirted with the idea of 14 last summer when they expanded. Its not really a matter of if, just when. If the schedule goes to 12 the big five leagues will not be able to resist the temptation of adding a couple of teams each. Under that senario Tulane would get an SEC spot for sure, the other would seem to be up for grabs.
No one's going to go to 14 schools because the money ADDED does not counteract the effect of having to divide by 14 instead of 12.

Going to 12 added a lot of money because of the championship game. The championship game revenue countered the divisor effect, but going to 14 adds nothing.

You don't need 14 schools to play a 12 game season.

A 12 team conference with a 12 game season will still play 8 in conference games:

5 within division.
3 from the other division on a rotational basis (probably)
4 OOC.

You could also do 5/4/3. or 5/5/2.

But the notion that the ACC is going to go to 14 schools is silly. or the Big 12. or the SEC.

It is in fact the wishful thinking of a fan of a school that wishes they would get invited to one of those conferences.

Memphis would be lucky to be in the Big East.
and
the Big East would be lucky to have Memphis.

both sides have a lot to offer...and i think we would bring a lot to the Big East...it's just that simple.

Oh, you mean like Louisville?

Memphis wants to be in a southern FB conference with a BCS autobid and all that guarenteed free money each year. Memphis also wants to be in a BB conference with UL and UC. By next season, we will have neither. It sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbled.

well Wilkie...if we had a option...SEC here we come...but thats just not going to happen...outside of that i would say the Big East...we already have a good bit of hate with UL and UC...and i think we could learn to love/hate West Virginia also...plus the NBig-East (being post-split) would be a very good basketball and football conference...i just hope it happens...if not...i guess we will stay in the C-USA.

Go Tigers!!!

Wilkie , are you serious ? You mean Memphis can be a bigtime school like South Florida or UC ? Thanks alot.

The Big East would be lucky to have us because of our market , corporate support and bowl game tie in .In others words , Memphis has some serious money backing their program , in large part thanks to John Calipari .

Money makes the world go round . Without it you reholding telethons or dropping sports, not winning games.

As for the comments about Memphis being a laughingstock in football ,we will take on any Big East right now and win . We could lose to West VA ,but there is not a single team in that league that we can't beat right now on any given day . I live in the present , not 30 years ago or 5years in the future.

My point to you Wilke is I realy don't care what league Memphis is in ,if we continue to win things will take of themselves .

I bet its been awhile

-- And just for the record....we don't need to get down a beg because there are many teams in your league (UCF, ECU and Marshall to name a few) that would jump to the BE in a heartbeat...THe BE is your only hope of ever getting into a BCS conference...maybe you should be a little more respectful

We can't say much about what we've done the last quarter century, but we do have some history dating back to the 60's and we definitely think that we're a program on the rise. Most Tiger fans beleive that we can emulate what Virginia Tech and Kansas State have been able to do the last decade.

Anyway, it seems to me that the Big East is more concerned about potential and history than about past performance. Otherwise, South Florida wouldn't have gotten a sniff.

how could he have kept Memphis from leaving w/ UL and UC if the invite from the BE was there? Makes no sense.

What he is means is that the Big East agreed not to take Memphis .In return BB would go along with everything MT wanted during the process .

Memphis is the number two school in C-USA behind Louisville. The AutoZone Liberty Bowl and major corporate support from Fed EX & AutoZone are part of the Memphis portifolio .If C- USA lost Memphis , Houston , Tulane and USM would have jump to the WAC , so C-USA would have disbanded .

Memphis has been the #3 school in CUSA behind CINCINNATI and then Louisville. Cincinnati has won outright or shared EVERY regular season conference championship. Louisville hasn't done that. Memphis sure hasn't. Until last season Cincinnati has generally had better football than Memphis too. Although the programs have been closer. But in basketball Cincinnati has been the dominant program. Then Louisville.

I think UC is the number one basketball program while Louisville is the number one football program.

Guys , I was not talking about wins and losses . No, I meant that Memphis is number two in overall fan support , corporate support , fund rasing and attendance .

Cincy football attendance is a little lite and their basketball area is really small . Memphis aveages over 40,000 for football and over 16,000 in basketball . Louisville numbers are about the same in football and a little higher in hoops.I was talking money , not win and losses.

UC has a ways to go in regards to football attendance. That what UM & UL have over the Bearcats.

Memphis is ahead of Cincinnati is corporate support and fundraising? Memphis may currently have the edge in football and basketball attendance, but you would be hardpressed to support the above claim. UC's endowment is 3 times what Memphis' is, and UC is in the process of a 120 million dollar upgrade of its athletic facilities (much of which has been, and will be funded by private donors).

boys...boys...boys...we could argue this all day...we're updating too...who isn't...we have endowments and corporate dollars out the wazoo also...but i don't think this thread is about who's better or not...when it comes down to it this thread is basicly saying HA HA we got in the Big East and you didn't...i hope we do one day get in the Big East...but until then we're in the C-USA and thats the way it is.

Tulane would and will never get another shot at the SEC; many sources have said that the SEC will NEVER allow a school that leaves the SEC back in the fold. That goes for Ga Tech also, it has been stated. Why would the SEC want Tulane? No disrespect for that fine school, but the SEC would love to see Vandy leave (except for academics). so why would they want another private small school like Tulane? Also, I'm sure LSU would invite TU with open arms. NOT. Memphis would get an invite before TU, and I think it will be a cold day in hell before Memphis enters the SEC. We will most likely, if we continue our progress, get and accept a full membership in the B.E., and 'coog don't bother to respond, I/we know how you feel about this. You are however full of it, and you know it. 03-wink

Gomemphistigers1,

I don't recall any UC fans gloating at your expense over our inclusion into the Big East. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of UC fans would love to see you in the Big East. Memphis would bring a lot to the Big East. I hope that the decision makers will vote Memphis in very soon.
