Based on Holmoe (BYU AD) last press conference it looks like we may finally be out of our annual game with BYU. With Greg Hughes out of office (and fingers crossed going to jail) we should be able to drop BYU and get Utah State and hopefully some other MW rivals back on the schedule with some regularity.
Really? Utah is going to drop BYU from their future schedules?
That would be a killer for BYU Independence if true.

BYU should get Air Force back on their schedule and regularly rotate the "Range Schools" (Air Force, Colorado St, Wyoming) it. They seem to play Boise, Utah St, Hawaii, and San Diego on a fairly regular basis and are scheduling the Nevada schools too when they can.

Don't get me wrong, BYU definitely wants the game. But if Utah doesn't want the game, Utah doesn't want the game. BYU joining a conference wouldn't change things.

We did shortly after leaving the MWC, and the state legislature tried to defund the University- not the athletic department, the entire university.
But the house speaker who was responsible for the proposal to write continuing the series into state law, auditing the university of Utah athletic department, and very real threats to defund the university is not seeking re-election amidst ethics/bribery allegations. And our University president who cow-towed to his threats was fired.
We have a longer history with USU, and frankly they’re a better program these days, so I look forward to reviving that series.

As usual, question Utah fan's version of events when it relates to anything BYU--especially when BYU is cast as the super villain with phenomenal cosmic powers able to control things far beyond their own organization.
While dropping the annual Utah/BYU football game for 2 years in favor of a Michigan H/H after joining the PAC12 upset lots of people including Rep. Greg Hughes, it wasn't until basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak cancelled Utah's return trip to BYU over "safety concerns" due to the infamous Nick Emery slap-punch in their game at SLC at a buyout cost of $80,000 that things boiled over. Hughes went public questioning the Utah ath dept motivations as this was just the latest in-state game they were shelving. In response Krystkowiak's WIFE went after Hughes in social media telling him to "mind his own business". Hughes' position in the legislature actually had him where he could and did order an audit over the use of funds by the Utah athletic department to determine if they were using tax dollars to intentionally cause harm to other in-state parties (nothing came of that by the way--see the link below for details). Krystkowiak ended up paying for the game cancellation with his own money instead of athletic department budget after all eyes were on it.

Defund the whole university? Where did that come from?
Utah President David Pershing was fired because he "cow-towed to [Hughes'] threats"?
https://www.deseretnews.com/article/8656...-year.html
More like Pershing resigned earlier than he planned to retire after landing on the wrong side of a messy political fight over the abrupt termination of the Huntsman Cancer Institute's director. On the other side of that fight was billionaire donor and namesake Jon Huntsman, Sr.

It is also appearing that once the BYU/Boise State 12-year series is up after the 2023 season that there will be a break there for at least the 2024 season since Boise State has announced OOC games vs Houston and Cincinnati and @ Georgia Southern and Oregon that season. Only half the games for 2024 are announced for BYU yet (@ Wyoming, @ East Carolina, @ UNLV, @ NC State, vs Hawaii and Georgia Southern).
Since teams have so few OOC games inevitably some rivalry games will go unplayed each season--but it would be nice to keep a tight rotation of several rivalry games going.

That’s why he was fired. I didn’t say or imply otherwise. As for the political pressure, that started before the BBall series was canceled. And yes, the threats were to pull institutional funding. That won’t remain an open secret much longer.
But at least you didn’t dispute the part about BYU’s new place in the state pecking order. Weber looks to have taken a step back so at least you’re back in third.
