Especially if Jim Phillips is there and officially proclaims it as such.

Heard this blurb at the Spring game. A minor league team (independent league like Joliet and Schaumburg) approached Peters last Summer and offered to rehab the baseball field, add lights, new seats, concourse etc. They would use the field in the Summer and the NIU team would not be effected. They did however want to sell alcohol, so they were turned down. Not sure if it was university rules, NCAA rules or just Peters, but that's the story I heard.

Same thing happened in the 1980s at Illinois. The university built a nice, new ballpark yet turned down the chance to be the home of a minor-league team because it wanted to sell beer.

I once asked AD Compher about beer in the West stands and he said it wasn't happening. I don't know who the decision is coming from but there is definitely high up people that dont want beer insight within any of our stadiums. I guess the football and convo suites are a different story.

I respect the school officials decision but in todays economy can you really afford to not take deals like this? A private organization renting a field and selling beer during Summer school should not be that much of a concern.

How nice would it be if this could pay for the baseball team to have field turf so they dont have to worry about a torn up field if they play on it the day after a big rain storm.

RE: Baseball NIU vs NU in Geneva
Outside of the alcohol sales, as the people of Zion know now, there are people involved in Independent Leagues that are more than a little suspect.

Hell, even the more benign Rockford indy league operation has their stadium in foreclosure.

Considering the summer collegiate team based in Sycamore doesn't have great attendance, someone interested in operating an independent league team (with only a slightly better talent level) in DeKalb seems like a dubious partner.

Now, if alcohol sales were an obstacle to the summer collegiate team taking up residence in the summers- that's a slightly different story. See the DuPage Hounds at Benedictine in Lisle. There you're only expecting mild facility enhancements from a partner that might last longer than an indy team.
