RE: Further SBC expansion
What they say about the WAC:

Really, nothing to add here. The conference lost so many members that they had no choice but to grab FCS upgrades. Just to help on the basketball side, they added Texas-Arlington, Denver and Seattle. If the CUSA/MWC adds multiple WAC schools such as Utah St. and San Jose St., the WAC is over. Right now, LA Tech is lobbying hard to join the CUSA/MWC merger. If they are passed over, they’ll be ringing the doorbell at Sun Belt commissioner Benson’s house…with UTSA, Texas St, and New Mexico St. standing at the door with them. Idaho and NMSU seem to be in the toughest spot, as due to location and markets, Utah St., SJSU, LA Tech, UTSA and Texas St. all seem to be strong candidates to be in either the CUSA/MWC conference or the Sun Belt. Idaho and NMSU might be left out of the mix.

Probability of expanding in the near future: they would love to, but have no school available. They would need to literally beg FCS schools such as Montana, Montana St., Cal Poly, UC Davis, Portland St., Lamar, and SHSU to upgrade.

Why? Unless we lose teams, 12 is a perfect number.

I would assume it might be because of potential losses. They are just guessing, of course. And it is all about football, anyway.

From what I can tell, all the talk about those teams has to do with the prospect of losing FIU, UNT, etc. to the so called Alliance of the CUSA and MWC. No telling where that deal is headed. Looks like a big mess to me right now.

But, if say UNT and FIU were to go, then I think the SBC wants to be ready to act.

I would hate to lose NT, but I'd be glad to see the two Florida schools go, as I was glad to see Denver leave. Nothing personal against any of the three(FIU,FAU and Denver)other than they are so far away. Expensive travel costs. Wouldn't mind seeing Tech, Texas-San Antonio, and Georgia Southern in the Belt if we have openings. Charlotte wouldn't be bad. Don't care to see New Mexico State come back.

FAU has already pretty much indicated it isn't going anywhere. And really, the travel expense to Miami probably isn't much different than the travel expense to Georgia Southern. Man, Statesboro, GA is really off the beaten path!

I've been pining to renew our rivaly with Georgia Southern ever since we left the TAAC. I'd love to see them in there. I always thought that was our biggest and best rivalry back then.

I remember that when we'd go to Stateboro to play them, they would shower the court with toilet paper on their first score. And unfortunately, I will never forget Eric Hightower's shot from the corner that pierced my heart.

There were a lot of those in the TAAC. But the one that absolutely took the cake as the all time hosing was at Houston Baptist in 1986 when they got a Houston Baptist alum to referee. I'll never forget nor forgive.

What others have posted on this subject, and I don't know if they are correct or not, but that it's all about TV contracts. According to them, the networks don't care so much that there is a big following in the market, just that a school gives them exposure in the market.

That was the first Trojan game I ever attended. I can't remember last year's game, but I can vividly recall Hightower's shot that knocked us out of the NCAA. Bummer!03-melodramatic
