Looks like the breakfast was a sellout. I hope all went well. I hope Bowden can quickly turn the Akron program around...good for Akron and good for the MAC.

Good point, Lou- it took forever for OU to turn around their program and they still aren't exactly tearing it up. akron won't take that long but they will struggle for a couple years.

Frank won 9 games and a MAC East title in his second season (2006).

In 2004, the last year with Knorr Ohio beat Kentucky. Then in 2005 Frank beat Pitt in his first season.

Ohio BCS wins:

2004-Kentucky
2005-Pitt
2006-Illinois

Ohio was a so-so MAC program when Frank took over and now is a good program.

I think Akron is 3 years away from having enough talent to win 4-5 games. I'm not sure Bowden is going to be able to last long enough at Akron to get the job done but I'm sure they'll try to give him 6 years as a courtesy.

Condescending sounds like a cheap shot.
After attending the "Breakfast with the Bowdens"
I came away highly impressed. The Bowden
family lives and breathes WINNING football.

Two points well worth stating: 1) the Akron Defensive
Co-ordinator is Chuck Amato. He is the former head
coach at North Carolina State where for five of the
seven years he was there his defenses ranked number
one in the nation. For many years his defenses were
ranked number one at Florida State. The defense is
already dominating the offense in Spring practice at
Akron. 2) Newspaper and other sources are reporting
that potential player interest in Akron includes several
four and five star quality players. Snagging a few of
these kids should turn Akron into top tier program
in just a couple of years. It is pure wishful dreaming
that Akron will stumble along for six years.

The word "ignorant" came to mind.

1) Amato is not in the ACC anymore and all defenses dominate their offenses in spring and preseason ball.
2) Again, these guys are in the MAC and not getting 4 & 5 star players that go to the ACC; Amato couldn't even get them at NC State. Great they got pops there for a breakfast, but at the end of the day it's Terry Bowden there, he won't last 3 years before they're looking for the next guy to turn the program around.

How hard is it for any defense to dominate that Akron offensive juggernaut?

I have to agree with the above sentiments. Akron has not had a lot of success in the past for various reasons and the success they have had is largely a result of Kent State not trying for a couple of decades.

With Kent taking football seriously now they have become that solid backyard program Bowden is talking about building. Kent is an easier sell regionally as its the regional school with a huge enrollment. Those Don James teams in the 70s are indicative of how far Kent could probably go in football.

With Ohio they were an excellent Division II level program in the 30s, a strong college division program in the 60s and simply got over their head in the transition to a full FBS schedule in the 80s. The way Ohio is competing again is by dumbing down the schedule with Marshall, New Mexico State, Utah State en route to 10 wins last year. Ohio can sell its campus nationally as Franks QB is from Oklahoma and is able to hit the JUCOs across the country better than any other MAC school. Franks Big 12 connections bring an intangible unlike anything I think Terry brings.

Terry is a sharp guy and will make Akron better but I think recruiting will be his biggest issue. The programs celing is probably 7 wins, and a bowl victory I'm afraid because of the factors I outlined.

1. NC State never had the #1 defense in the nation. What success Amato did have at NC State was on the arm of Philip Rivers, not his defense. His record low defense held opponents to 17.7 per game in 2005, which is good, but #1 is usually 10 points or less. Finding yardage totals to prove this wrong is being difficult.

2. Amato was never the DC at Florida State. He had a number of "Associate Head Coach" or "Assistant Head Coach" titles, but the DC was always Mickey Andrews, whose defensive style is what brought many of the spread offenses seen today. He was the DL/LB coach. Bobby Bowden's push to make Amato the DC after Andrews' retirement over Jimbo Fisher's objections is what sparked the entire affair that led to Bowden's forced departure after the 2009 season.

Bowden will get players. He will find them and get the ones that can't quite get in at other schools. They will get players. He will need a full 4 years to challenge.
