I wonder if sticking with this kid despite the injury is a good way to signal to the HS coaches that NIU is a good program to consider...from a diplomacy standpoint if nothing else.

From the linked articled, Simeon Head Coach Robert Smith (loved a lot of his stuff with the Cure) said:

Quote:"I give Northern a lot of credit. They were the only ones who stuck with him the whole time. Going to Northern is not a bad thing at all — new coach, new system."

I like the new coach "endorsement" from Coach Smith. It would have been nice if he mentioned the facilities. 03-wink

Ha!

I bet this kinda feels like how I felt when my Sergeant Major gave me a bro hand shake when I bumped into him off duty. WTF?! Awkward... Except this is the President and he is a band dude...so...you know. Way more awkward.

That quote is what made me think of it. That there's more involved than just the one kid.

Especially if you think of the recent blunder(s) by the Illness in trying to secure Coach Smith as an assistant as a way to open up a pipeline. What little was there was probably damaged.

Looks like MM has a good (or at least the beginning of a good) relationship with the premier Chicago Public League school (Hell, the top HS program in all of IL and one of the top in the USA). Hopefully it's a sign of good things to come in the future.

Illinois didn't try to get Smith as an assistant, and the article you linked here at the time didn't say they did, either. Smith said a week ago he'd talked to Groce and didn't expect to be offered a position, and he never was.

A kid at Simeon (Kendrick Nunn) has moved Illinois up his list and visited since UI hired Groce. I don't think anything was "damaged" in relation to Illinois and Simeon.

FWIW, I've heard very good things about Montgomery and the job he's doing in the Chicagoland area. He's getting in on the right types of kids but is also significantly more visible than Patton ever was. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he continues to do well recruiting in the city. It was rough sledding this year, but there are better days ahead and I think Montgomery is doing the right things to get NIU back to being competitive. Having Robert Smith on your side never hurts, either.

smith is naturally and likely to be mostly on his side and what he thinks is a good fit for his players.

I wonder how the recent Miller event has affected Coach Smith's thinking about NIU?

Springfield Soxfan, there are only 2 true pt gaurds on the team now. A good make-up of the team would be, 3-pt gaurds, 3-shooting gaurds, 3 bigs and 4- 6'7 athletic fowards.

Ok, my bad, I had thought we were up to 4, thanks for the clarification.
