RE: And the Isreal haters try again
A few serious questions for you and I'll try to be fair.
1. Do you think the US/Israel alliance has been on balance beneficial for the US and why?
2. Do you have any religious motivations for this belief; for example, belief that a rebuilt temple and red heifers from the region can hasten the return of Christ?
3. Do you have any sympathy for the Palestinians and why?
4. Are you willing to have your kids be drafted and fight on the front lines in the next few years if Israel doesn't feel safe?

That's as fair as you get? You are an idiot. It has nothing to do with the article. You have shown yourself to be a racist, are you anti-Semitic as well? To be fair, let me answer that for you..... Yes.

1. Yes, because Israel takes some of the attention of those bent on destruction of western civ
2. Absolutely not.
3. Some. Their leaders have been exploiting them for decades. I feel no sympathy for them because of Israels persistant stance on the sotuation
4. Poor question

1. Somewhat, we do have a lot of interests there as far as business is concerned. We do get returns for that.
2. Nope. As a religious man myself I don't believe that anything can hasten it. It is a selfish thought to think so.
3. I do sympathize with some of them. There leaders take advantage of them and Israel hates even the best of them.
4. Nope and that's why I only support economic alliances with other countries. If we were going to have to fight with them one day I'd rather it be to protect our interests and not theirs.

RE: And the Isreal haters try again
It's more a response to the thread title than the article. I've been called an Israel hater (and worse) on here, definitely by Ninerfan but I think Torch too. Either way I want to know where people are coming from. What is an Israel hater? Someone who wants them harmed? Someone who wants to cut off foreign aid or end the alliance (maybe all alliances, like Washington advised)? Someone who doesn't want to go to war with them? I think this is one issue we as a nation can't have an open and honest debate because the anti-Semite phrase gets thrown around (often by Christian neocons like Ninerfan) to poison the discourse. But it's extremely important with a possible war looming between Iran and Israel, which as it stands now would almost certainly rope us in, and with our already overstretched voluntary military could turn into another Vietnam if it doesn't go well. I'm above draft age and don't have kids, so it wouldn't really affect me too personally, but for those of you with kids in or approaching 18-25 this is serious business.
Anyway, my answers:
1. Israel was helpful in the Cold War as a proxy in the region fighting Soviet influence, and beat the Soviet backed Egyptians. However, I don't see much in the way of benefits at all anymore, because Israel doesn't really care about anyone but Israel and so won't do anything it wouldn't have done anyway and demands hegemony over its region (its founding motto is "Never again"). Is it fair to just dump them? Probably not, but it needs to be reexamined. I agree with Torch's response somewhat but I'll also add that a lot of them who hate western civilization do so because of Israel, their perceived bad acts (fair or not) and our strong ties. What business interests, Nomad?
2. Not me obviously but it's my understanding many Christians do; some farmers here breed red heifers to send to the Holy Land because it was foretold an Israeli red heifer's blood has to be spilled for Christ's return. Jerry Falwell was a dispensationalist. Bull said before that I don't understand so I welcome any clarification on this. I normally wouldn't care but it becomes my business when religion is mixed with politics. The fact that these people try to influence our foreign policy scares the crap out of me. If for instance Israel did anything to create an international incident and piss off the world (by say nuking several of its neighbors), there are people who would tether us to their bad acts even if it meant war with Russia, China and the rest of the world. It already hurts our international reputation by vetoing so many UN SC resolutions; some may be driven by antisemitism but IMO some are legitimate complaints about settlements in the occupied territories, the right to return under international law and the west bank walls and blockades.
3. I think they have a right to return under the historical interpretations of the New Zionists like Benny Morris (ie that the Palestinians did not leave voluntarily). I oppose the west bank wall, blockades and seizing of their land. I do of course denounce their civilian attacks though.
4. If I'm sending my kids off to war I want our interests to be clear.

1. Hard to say. On balance probably not but our alliances should not be based on only what we get out of it. Does spending billions in Africa on aids really benefit us on balance? No! But it's still the right thing to do
2. No.. The end will come when it comes and can not be hastened by any act of man..
3. Yes! They have been offered a state multiple times but are lead by zealots who want Israel off the map more than compromise. I feel for them.
4. Depends on the war not the participants...

The obsession lives on.

None of our business. Israel isn't part of the US.
