Consumer Spending: 1900 to present
http://www.theatlantic.com/business/arch...et/255475/

Quote:A century ago, we spent more than half our money on food and clothes. Today, we spend more than half of our money on housing and transportation. Our ambitions turned from bread and shirts to ownership and highways. We are all subtle victims of the expectations that 100 years of wealth has bought.

Financial "hardship" is relative. If you've never traveled to 3rd world countries, you have never seen real poverty.

Agreed. This is why most US social programs are unnecessary. There's plenty of evidence to say they're harmful.

People will spend their money on cable, cell phones, movies and drugs/booze if someone else will feed them.

I wish someone would have compiled a chart with the total amount we pay in taxes (income, state, sales, etc)

Are you saying that you want the US poor to get brought down to the level as 3rd world country poor?

I wouldn't put it past Torchy. Of course, he would probably prefer to bring slavery back.
