Maybe Super can shed some light.

Ann Maria in one word "Perfectionist". I have read all of the comments here and can without a doubt say that Ann never ran up the score or kept the players in the game longer to humiliate a opposing team.

In the game just as in practice she played her players until they got the it right. I really don't think she kept track of the score all that much it was her belief that if the players where not executing the game plan as drawn up they stayed in the game until they did just as she did in practice. If anything she was punishing her players for not playing as hard as she thought they should have been playing. She had the ladies practicing just as hard towards the end of the season as she had at the begining which I believe is why they almost always seem to run out of energy at the end of the year.

I was wondering why the banquet was held so soon after the season my guess is she knew then and wanted to be there one last time for the players.

Anyway; She had gotten into a number of arguements with boosters about running up the score and practicing the players to much and to hard she even throw one of them out of her office and told her staff never to let that person in ever again. She would push to the very edge of the rules and do mean to the second of how long they would practice.

I think she was given the option to resign to save face and help her get a new job. She is one of our winningest coaches and as a whole a very good coach she just needs to learn to backoff a little and enjoy life.

She was just trying to be to good of a basketball coach and not enough of a person coach, like I said a "perfectionist".

RE: Coach Gilbert
Super,

When does/did her contract expire? Was it at the end of the current cycle? (I'm not sure when college basketball coaches contracts expire. I'd assume end of March or sometime in April).

BTW, from some of the games I saw, when a team is up 30 - 40 points, call off the dogs. Period.

30 point leads are 'garbage time' not 'perfection time'.

Maybe the next coach's persona will be closer to Murphy than Gilbert?

Her contract was up, she had a 4+1 with an option clause. They are self renewing unless negated by firing or resigning. All EMUs head coaching contracts are that way.

I wish her all the best and hope and I think she will get another head coaching job at a D1 school.

Maybe, but quite frankly the violations weren't the big stuff which gets the NCAA moving ASAP. E.g., OSU FB.

That is why I think she was given the option to resign instead.

Dear emu steve,
I agree, but then, why the resignation? Perjury is a big thing, so, If that were the case I can see the resignation as it came.
The more I look at this, as others have implied, this was probably a done deal at the beginning of the season. If, not then, probably when Eastern received some kind of report from the NCAA during the season.
My question is what are the penalties, and could they be severe?

Penalties for whom? Gilbert or EMU (or both)?

Guys, this is significant but I wouldn't equate it with Richard Nixon...

If this was perjury, of Nixonian dimensions, she'd be long gone.

Dear emu steve,
I was asking about penalties for Eastern, sorry about not being too clear on that. You brought a chuckle to me with the reference about Nixon. Didn't mean to sound soooo serious about it, but in cases like these doesn't the coach always get by scott free, and the school gets the punishment?

I think Gilbert will take a significant hit (or HAS taken her hit by resigning) and EMU get off light.

I have no information that EMU athletics (compliance) screwed up.

Thanks.

That is what I would have guessed.

My feeling all along is that Gilbert was being treated by the NCAA as a rogue coach and the problem was Gilbert, not EMU.

Yep, that's the original report that we discussed when it first came out back in September 2010. A key quote was that "[e]vidence suggests, but does not confirm, that student-athletes were directed to give false information about the number of hours they were required to practice and the voluntary nature of practices."

RE: Coach Gilbert
Dear Friends,
After reading this report, (I had not seen it before) my conclusion is that Coach Gilbert, even though she was quoted as admitting responsibility many times, seemed arrogant and dismissive, as well as trying to pin blame on her assistants at times. I was really taken aback by her very dictatorial control over the student athletes. If, my feelings are correct, it may very well be the best that she resigned.

That's the first time I have read that document. Paints a bad picture of both Gilbert and her blatant flaunting of the rules and then the attempted cover-up by the staff. Sad.
