O/T CMU hire
A good reason not to get hung up on speculation which wasn't even close on this one.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...l-michigan

(I got this story from the main MAC BBS - which is the best source for MAC stories or stories about one of the schools.).

Here is from the CMU Rivals.com site.

RE: O/T CMU hire
While I think Ohio U made a good hire Keno had alot of issues at Providence I believe with player control. I believe James Still was at Providence during Keno's watch.

From the scout boards:

2. The coaching staff need to monitor their players off the court and in the class room, in order to have a stable foundation from which to grow. PC fans won't put this entirely on Keno's shoulders, but a number of the players found their ways into a number of off-court issues, leading to 3 expulsions related to two separate incidents, and a number of transfers (several of which Keno's staff recruited, despite their not being BE material

Sounds like CMU's program may not have gotten the magic bullet they sought.

BTW, thought I read that Keno is the son of Dr. Tom Davis, longtime Iowa coach.

If you look at the EZ is gone thread on Bankhoops Steve Bell hates this hire. CMU missed the boat which is good for us. I think NIU and EMU did very well with their hires.

CMU's FB and hoops are not where they should be.

As you know, the AD is feeling the heat.

RE: O/T CMU hire
Great Hire! Keno Davis took a Drake program which was a perennial bottom feeder in the Missouri Valley Conference and took it to the Top 20--first time since 1969. I lived in Des Moines, IA, minutes from the Drake campus and I watched almost all of Drake's games on TV and they were outstanding. He employs a very entertaining, high scoring offense and his teams were very fundementally sound. Keno was the toast of the town and when he left for Providence after getting Drake to the NCAA tournament (an impossibility for decades) everyone was crushed.

He didn't get much of a chance at Providence, which didn't stand much of a chance in the Big East, but his teams were competitive. When Ramsey was fired at EMU, I had Keno Davis on my wish list. He is an outstanding coach and has a great personality. CMU is lucky to have Keno Davis, great hire.

Let's also remember, Keno Davis was National Coach of Year in I believe 2008, his last year at Drake. He was poised to make a strong run in the NCAA tournament when Western Kentucky provided the highlight of the tournament with their desperation shot at the buzzer to beat them.

RE: O/T CMU hire
I've heard mixed reviews:

1). Yes PC (Providence College) is a near graveyard job.

2). Many feel that Keno won at Drake his ONE year with his father's talent.

MY opinion: The jury is out. The evidence doesn't line up enough for me to draw an inference.

BTW, again this makes my point: Why should a coach with a good job leave for a graveyard job?

Gary Waters went from Kent to Rutgers and ended up getting fired.

Groce left a very nice job at Ohio for a tough Illinois job.

Jim Christian left KSU for TCU and has come back to the MAC.

and, of course, Davis left Drake for Providence and ended up getting fired.

Here's the real deal on Keno Davis AND his dad Dr. Tom Davis. Tom brought the Drake program to respectability. However, Keno was the top assistant when Tom was head coach. Keno did a lot of the coaching, recruiting, etc. Tom was/is a beloved figure in Iowa hoops, but he was kind of a figurehead at Drake.

When Keno took 100% control at Drake, when Tom stepped down, he took the program to the NEXT LEVEL and I can tell you, he did not have ONE problem with player conduct. In fact, he had one of the classiest teams I've ever seen...Drake is a private university in the MVC, think Northwestern in the Big 10. Players like Adam Emmenecker, Klayton Korver, Bucky Cox, and Josh Young were classy as you can get in Division 1 sports. Again, Drake is a very clean, trouble free program with REAL student/athletes.

Providence was riddled with problems before Keno arrived there and yet he still posted a respectable record. I was a very close observer of Keno Davis and the jury IS NOT OUT. He is a great coach and first class all the way. I will be rooting for him and CMU next season (except when they play EMU, of course).

RE: O/T CMU hire
As far as why MAC coaches or MVC (Mo. Valley) coaches leave for big, graveyard programs like Providence or Rutgers, the answer is very simple...MONEY. I know Keno Davis was making $250,000 at Drake and was paid $1 million to coach Providence, even though he surely knew he wasn't going to be able to compete against the teams in the Big East with the talent he had. That is why Groce left Ohio for Illinois. Everyone knows that with the talent Ohio has coming back, they are a much better team than Illinois, but the money difference is too large to turn down.

Thanks for the info on Keno and Drake. Some of what posters posted was superficial giving Dr. Tom credit for stuff when he might have been a figure head at the end.

I can't cite actual dollar amounts, but I believe the MAC is trying to raise the coaches salaries when there is a real chance of losing the coach. Or lost in the case of Ohio.

Maybe info will come out regarding Akron, Ohio, etc. (Dambrot, Christian).

I'm guessing we see more 400 - 500K salaries in the MAC.

Steve Bell's comment on Keno's Providence years and the player problems:

Yes, he recruited some real bottom of the barrel types, character wise.

This has corporate search firm all over it.

Still, he did go 28-5 in the Missouri Valley, that one year, and that Drake team had Michigan kids (recruited by Chris Davis) who were overlooked by MAC schools.

I believe the Providence fans have a different viewpoint on the Keno years but don't blame him 100% for the player actions.

I don't know about you guys...but I'm looking forward to witnessing the debacle in Mt. Pleasant for at least another 3 years.

Check out the lengthy Providence comment that I cut and pasted onto our board...via the CMU rivals board.

It does not paint a pretty picture of Keno.

Should we take bets on who gets canned first? Keno, Enos or Heeke?

It is good to see the MAC with such strong coaches again; Davis, Christian, Dambrot, Murphy, Toledo's coach (whose name escapes me). These are all young, proven winners. The MAC is coming back! Now if someone can lure Braun back to the fold...I think he's still floundering at Rice.

Thanks I would encourage EMU fans to go to the WMU hoops board and read the chronicles of Keno Davis and of course the James Still chapter.

My bet is that the adm cleans out Enos and the AD. CMU's history as Steve Bell puts it in hoop coaches has been failure.

Could not disagree more with regards to Keno Davis. Dan Enos is in over his head as football coach, so my money would be on Enos. If I was a WMU fan, I'd worry MORE about your lame basketball coach and program.

RE: O/T CMU hire
Keno cashed in on one good year in a weak MVC (Drake was the only MVC school to make the tourney that year) and was a disaster at PC. Maybe he's better suited at the mid major level, but even that's hard to tell, since again, it was only one good year. I remember that Drake team fondly and they were exciting to watch. I had a mutual friend with Adam Emmenecker and saw him play at Arthur Hill a couple times, so I had a rooting interest (he was a walk-on at Drake...and ended up being conference POY his senior year. Pretty awesome). It's just that Keno should've waited before he took a job at a bigger program. He was in so far over his head. Go look at the WMU board and see the details from PC fans. I wouldn't be confident if I were a CMU fan. 3 years of a mess trumps 1 good season, IMO.

Wow.

What on earth gives you any inclination that Keno is a good hire? After reading multiple opinions on the guy, I'd say about 90% think he is a bad hire? Whether or not that proves to be true...only time will tell.

That lame bball coach has owned EMU over the last nine years. Kudos to Murphy and Co. for beating us twice this year, I'm really looking forward to the 2013 matchups next year.
