UConn faces Big East tourney ban

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Big East presidents have agreed on a policy that would bar Connecticut's men's basketball team from next season's conference tournament if the Huskies are disqualified from the 2013 NCAA tournament.

Spokesman John Paquette confirmed Friday that Big East presidents agreed to the concept during a meeting on March 7 in New York. He said the policy would bar any team in any sport from a conference tournament or championship if they are ineligible for the NCAA postseason.

UConn faces a ban from the 2013 NCAA tournament because it has failed to meet the NCAA's academic standards from 2009-2011. The school is seeking a waiver from the ban, citing recent academic improvements.

Paquette said official language likely will be adopted in May, with the policy in place next season.

Connecticut was expected to learn whether it was eligible to play in the 2013 NCAA tournament within the next few days.

UConn is the first high-profile school to receive the harshest penalty of a postseason ban due to a poor academic performance.

Welp, DePaul now has the 15-seed going for them.

That would mean WVU and UCONN out of the way!

Some how I'm confident that the NCAA will find a way for UConn to get around the APR requirement.

I've read they are considering letting them use more recent semester's results to qualify.

It will be a missed opportunity to make an example of some program to make their point about academics. A big fail for the NCAA if they waiver them.
