Who says we're playing them every year? We already have a yearly ACC team on the schedule in Duke.

Whats the upside for us playing them? I mean I know what THEY get out of it, but what do we get?

You get the chance not to embarrass yourselves on an annual basis in your own city. A chance to show that SJU can fill half of MSG with Redmen fans.

And once again, why would we invite a fan base like this to the Garden? We'll continue to play the real ACC powerhouse...Duke.

We won't need the Johnnies to play in MSG. They want us to play there every year. Heck, if we were physically as close to MSG as St. John's, they would want us to play EVERY home game there, unlike St. John's who they only want there when they play a big-time opponent.

Cheers,
Neil

yeah yeah yeah same old BS from the orange faithful.

Those games aren't free. If you want to schedule a game at MSG you need to pay (last time i checked) 100K a game.

Twice a year the orange fan fill up the Garden and they think that they can do that every game every year. Please. Why don't you guys actually show up for a football game then brag about your fanbase.

St. Johns plays all but the bottom of the league at the Garden.

Yup

I could see Cuse + Pitt vs two BE schools in an annual Battle at the Garden.

LOL...sez ChickenLittle to the fans of a team which sells out MSG and can put 30,000 a few times a year at the Dome.

Fortunately your AD will understand economics and jump at the chance to share the gate at MSG.

The two are not comparable. Maryland is DC's team. So Georgetown being outnumbered in their arena by Twerps fans demonstrates this fact clearly and succinctly for all the local media to focus on. Hoya fans being outnumbered by Orange fans at their home games is chalked up to crazy, rowdy SU fans. It's not a big deal in the local papers.

Btw, word is your AD has already been talking with our AD about continuing the series on an annual basis and not just in terms of men's bb, but women's bb, and lacrosse as well. The sticking point will be available tickets for the men's game, but we worked around that the last time we played in DC and we will again - one way or another we'll get in. 03-wink

Cheers,
Neil

I heard at one point that the Duke series was not being renewed. That was at Duke's request. Has that changed.

Duke uses the series to recruit NYC.

True, but they also seem to play 1-2 games in the area each year as part of exempt events (NIT Tip-Off, 2KSports Classic, Jimmy V Classic), plus scheduling games at the IZOD Center when available (Butler, Xavier, Texas, Gonzaga). The Coaches vs. Cancer event will start up next year, breaking off from the 2KSports event and will be at the Barclays Center.

I think those discussions are now in the past tense. Georgetown has no current series with ACC schools (the Duke series ended in 2010) and none are scheduled. The prevailing wisdom is that once Boeheim retires, each school moves in a new direction. Unfortunate, but inevitable.

RE: Old vs New Dec 22nd MSG
I don't have a lot of doubt that SU will successfully be able to schedule either GT or SJU in the Garden. It's nice to talk about sticking it to members on their way out, but the reality is, that this is a convienent, non-united collection of schools with their own self-interests.

Syracuse scheduled Boston College while they were still a supposedly happy member in this league. Pitt scheduled Miami as well.

Villanova reportedly needed to be basically bribed into voting for a football expansion member.

Not much doubt, at the end of the day, that we'll see Georgetown or SJU pulling the trigger on such a series, if the windfall is there.

It's nice to talk about killing the BC series. But BC isn't Syracuse. Maybe in FB, neither is a big deal, but there is no comparison in basketball.

SJU, sure. Georgetown? Don't count on it.

Anyone surprised how no one is campaigning for a series with West Virginia? No.

GU didn't want West Virginia in the league and as I recall refused to play them for decades prior to them becoming a member. It's not the same.

Cuz WVU doesn't juice your fanbase like Cuse...I just see the lure of a guaranteed TV game every year too enticing for the Hoyas...remember you are losing 3 rivals and replacing them with some teams that won't travel in large numbers (I do think Memphis and Temple will send more fans than the typical 30 behind the bench). But WVU and Cuse would help fill your arena...no idea on Pitt. Georgetown still needs some name teams and CUse fills that in Aces.

Don't count on that. The alumni of SJU are not happy about the 'Cuses marketing campaign in NYC claiming they are in fact New York's team. This was pointed out to Lavin when he first came to SJU and he stated that he would take back the city. You don't do that by inviting that team into the city every other year.

Like Omni said...67% of the last 12 games at MSG were against teams other than SJU. The choice is your AD's...I'm pretty sure he'll grab the money.

We are New York's team. New York is a state as well as a city and since we are the premiere football program and premiere basketball program residing in the state, that makes the Orange New York's team. New York City is a part of the state, the most important part of the state. So we have a vested interest in marketing in the city.

But as FrankTheTank keeps pointing out, the city is a melting pot not just for other countries, but other states within the US. Which helps explain why Duke tops the poll of NYC's favorite basketball program and why Notre Dame and Penn State top similar polls in football.

Cheers,
Neil

Can you name another football program that resides in New York state that is better than the Orange, which still ranks in Top 20 of all-time D-1A wins, has won an NC, and has more College Football HOFs than all but a handful of schools?
