For a while they were dropping down to D-II but I guess they changed their minds.

I wonder if they will want to come back to the 'Belt to balance out UALR for non-football schools.

RE: New Orleans to stay D-I
Does anybody know the story here? They go through all the effort to drop to Division II, and now they're jumping right back to DI and talking football? Wha? I mean, if they needed a breather for sports post-Katrina I'm sure the NCAA would have given them one.

I notice this article says they switched from the LSU system to the UL system but it doesn't say why. More freedom in UL? It wouldn't surprise me if LSU held back the non-Baton Rouge campuses...but if they were moving to UL eventually anyway, I don't see why LSU forced them to drop sports.

I didn't know this needed its own thread. We talked about it in the considering D-I thread or whatever it's called.

RE: New Orleans to stay D-I
Very simple. The former President didn't think the school could afford to transfer general fund dollars to support athletics. So he put a student fee that would fund athletics up for vote of the students, and the vote failed. So the Pres drops it to Division 3.
UNO President is terminated; UNO transfers to a new system. A little investigation into division 3 reveals that it would be problematic (problem finding a league; not a huge money-saver). And now, with presumably more equitable funding than they got from LSU, can now afford to use some general fund dollars to support athletics. So they go back to division 1.
They will probably seek admission into the Southland, not the Sunbelt. The Southland has lower profile schools, but 2 within 2 hour driving distance of UNO and the outer bounds is Texas. Plus, they offer FCS football, a future possibility.
UNO played outstanding basketball from the early 1970s into the late 1990s.
