RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
Closest thing I've seen in football is the CMU vs MSU matchup.

MSU leades the all time series at 5-3. The schools are located relatively close to one another.

But yes, CMU considers it a rival, while MSU couldn't care less.

We have lost quite a bit of luster to this series since UC has began to dominate the series, esp since moving on up to a BCS conference. Miami still leads the all time series and in the decades of the 80's and 90's the series was very close in those 10 year periods....you go back to the 70's and Miami dominated that decade.......UC has been blowing us out the last few years which is disconcerting.

I bet if you asked UC football fans who their main OOC rival is, you will mostly get OSU and little else. I would think that few fans of the current team would think Miami. Some may remember back when, but times have changed and UC has been to a BCS bowl. If you ask UC basketball fans who their main OOC rival is, it's obviously X, plus a little UD, UK, and Memphis. Miami has been off the table for a while.

BASKETBALL - Again, really nobody.

Actually U of Detroit in hoops used to be kind of a rivalry for the Rockets.
Some of us were actually around for the Haywood fight.

I was there-thought the Rockets would win easily after Haywood swung on the ref. Very disappointing- Mix had a huge night as I recall.

As far as football is concerned what you say is simply not true, we alternate home and home vs UC every year. Like every year for 112 years straight. UC has no other out-of-conference rival. They have only played OSU 4 times in the last 80 years. Four. Ohio is probably their next closest team they play consistently but it is no where near ours. We have a Victory Bell we have been passing back and forth for 112 years and they come to Oxford every other year and you say its not a rivalry? In fact its the second oldest and continuing rivalry in all of college football.
Basketball is a different story. There it is Xavier, Dayton, and Wright State.

Having grown up in the area, I am well aware of the history. But it is history. It's not the current climate. The new UC football fan, the majority who came in on their move to the BE and the Brian Kelly run (the old UC football program had a very small fan base) and the current students don't view Miami as a rival. I just don't see it.

The two programs were once on equal grounds, and you could even say Miami had much the edge in tradition and quality, but those days are not these days, sad to say. Look at how the budgets of the two programs have changed over the last decade. It's just not equal footing any more, and the interest in the matchup has greatly decreased on both sides.

I agree that UC now has the Big East - Big Head and feel they are greater than what they are. And I agree that money goes a long way and they are a stronger program now than any other time in history. But Miami has also went through a down time after a bad coaching hire a few years back and recently with the disruption of another coaching turnover. We've been sputtering along and UC (and Ohio) have been beating us. But assuredly we wont continue always sputtering along and will give UC their share of losses in the future despite them being stronger now than ever. We still do well in head to head recruiting against them in the Cincinnati area.

BUT, its still considered a rivalry even if the interest has decreased. If we are not UC's OOC rival, I don't know who else would qualify as they don't play anybody else in any kind of consistency. If Louisville ever bolted to the Big 12, than I'd say that would be their new rival, but other than that, who have they played? A recent one-sided match has also decreased the interest that will sure bring out and rekindle the Miami hate the next time we thump them.

RE: Out-Of-Conference Rivals
With UC's BCS status, if we cannot find a way to close the competitive gap, we could be facing the loss of this series, or perhaps an insistence by UC to play the game in Cincy every year. It's tough for a old Miami guy like me to accept this......we "owned" UC when I was in school (beat 'em all four years) but as Axeme pointed out, that is getting to be ancient history. Still, even after our dominating run of the 70's, from the 80's up to 2003 we were on very even terms with them in those years if you look at the records.

For Kent, and probably Akron too, it would be Cleveland State in hoops. Unfortunately, they have very few fans so it isn't very interesting.

For a while Kent played YSU in football too. (cue the Penquin trolls) It was unfortunately a rivalry because we weren't much better than a 1-AA school...

You could ask 1000 fans, coaches, AD's and players of UK, OSU, UM, MSU, WVU, UL, UC, Pitt, etc. and not one would name a MAC school as one of their main OOC rivals.

We are "opponents."

Yeah, I agree. Being a fan of UB i can honestly say no other OOC D-1A program wants to be our "rival" in football. Syracuse? in their eyes, they wouldn't stoop so low as to consider UB a peer in the same stratosphere, let alone a rival. The SU fans think UB plays community college football.
I'm glad UMass is coming into the conference. We played them for 4 straight years in the mid-90's just before going 1A. I thought a little rivalry could develop there and now maybe it will. We already got the Sabres-Bruins thing going in hockey and Patriots-Bills.
