It figures. He has a hard time recruiting and holding on to players and when he finally gets a good one he gets fired and we lose her. I think Kent Athletics are in a bit of a slump.

RE: Kent Womens Basketball's
Western Michigan just hired their new head women's basketball coach. Looks like this guy had a lot of ties to Michigan, so not sure he was even considering the opening @ KSU. I wonder how far out Nielsen/staff are from hiring Lindsay's replacement (Lindsay was fired 32 days ago and no one has really heard much. To add to it, the late signing period started Wednesday and KSU already lost a verbal they had...)

Here is the link to the story on Western Michigan's new head women's coach:

I'm thinking even less and less of Nielsen.

He would never had let a men's opening go 1/4 this long.

Carducci says they're naming the new coach tomorrow.

I don't understand the secrecy, which is more than football, men'a basketball -- even Lefton.

I predict that this hire will be very telling and disappointing. (probably someone from a very unknown program)

Cschierh,

Couldn't have said it better myself. I heard from a few people that there aren't enough quality candidates to fill the vacant head women's basketball head coaching positions this year. I think Nielsen/Kleinlen/O'Donnell are truly scrambling to fill this position and with KSU not having the best facilities in the MAC, top coaching salaries, the new coach having to follow in the footsteps of the winningest coach in MAC History for basketball, and more desired openings in the MAC this year (see BG & Toledo)....they are finding it harder than they imagined to attract quality candidates to apply for and hopefully accept the offer.....

The question becomes, will KSU pay the new head women's basketball coach, more, less, or the same as Lindsay's salary last year? The other question becomes will former players/staff support the new head coach since a lot of them didnt care for Lindsay or will they push back for how poorly his firing was handled?

I hope that JN, TK, & CO know what they are doing.

I had heard a rumor the new coach might be coming from the staff here in Memphis, but have not gotten any confirmation on that. If so, this is who it would be. http://www.gotigersgo.com/sports/w-baskb...lle00.html

Steph Storm of the Beacon also says in her blog she's heard leading candidate was Memphis associate head coach Danielle O'Banion.

Steph' story is at

http://www.ohio.com/blogs/kent-state/ken...h-1.298892

From Memphis (video)

Video

(Click on "complete bio" for words)

Some stuff I've heard:

Jennifer Roos, Curt Miller's top assistant, has been named to replace Miller at BG.

--

Just for talk, here are some other applicants (guaranteed -- I've seen their applications)

1. Mike Terry, former well-regarded KSU assistant now associate at Vermont.

2. Salvatore Verdi, assistant coach at Kansas and former assistant and offensive coordinator at Nebraska.

3. Steve Mix (yeah, that Steve Mix). Elsewhere on the Web, it says he's taken head job at a Division III school. That story broke just three days after he had applied at Kent State. He's had only one year as a college coach -- 8-20 at Toledo back in the 90s.

4. Lee “Tooey” Loy, former High Point head coach, resigned a year ago, no reason found on Web. He had been 163-135. Big South Conference.

5. Jim Wiedie, former Indiana State head coach. Suspended, then fired two years ago. AD said it wasn't because of wins and losses.) Circumstances are really cloudy but there are red flags to me. Record was 166-118.

These are APPLICANTS. No indication they were even in finals. Obviously there were other applicants.

But it's interesting to talk about.

All this is public record through state freedom of information law.

Those applicants are all men. Not that you can legally say that you want to hire a woman, but possibly that was a consideration.

RE: Kent Womens Basketball's
I also saw an application from a former Wayne State head coach, who was a woman. Her record was 126-172, and most of her success came early in her career. Her contract was not renewed. But she was the only woman in the batch, which, of course, wasn't complete.

We have had an overabundance of men coaching women's sports --= at Kent and nationally. At Kent, there is Karen Linder (softball) and Kathleen Wiler (field hockey). Soccer, volleyball, track, gymnastics, golf are all men. Successful coaches (well, who knows about volleyball?), yes. But not women.

This appears to be a better hire than I thought would happen. Looks pretty good. Welcome coach OBanion.

GFlash 68, I agree. I am happy with the pedigree. Like any coach only time will tell for sure. Both the volleyball and basketball hire look pretty encouraging. Good news.

I can tell you guys this for sure: Memphis WBK was rotten before the current regime and apparently Danielle has had a lot to do with the turnaround. Other than that, I don't know much about her, but seems like everyone thinks it was a home run!

RE: Kent Womens Basketball's
I too like the pick. I like the talk about Memphis (and her) defending 94 feet. I loved the first years of Lindsay's time when they pressed every minute.

Lindsay's teams did score 90 points a game; Memphis was a shade below 70 last year.

I'm not sure the current team has enough speed to play uptempo.

I wonder if O'Banion can still bring in a couple of players. We just need bodies. KSU has just 10 -- one a walk-on -- if nobody transfers.

She's obviously a good recruiter. I always wondered how Lindsay could do so good recruiting in his best years. He was such a dour guy (and I generally liked him).

One more in this stream of consciousness. Carducci mentioned another finalist as Michigan associate head coach Dawn Plitzuweitm who also had a spectacular record. And Lori Bodnar, whom I know a little and have liked for many years. But I never thought she had a chance -- guilt by association with Lindsay.

Carducci said a fourth candidate was believed to be a college head coach from a level below Division I.

Carducci's story is at http://www.recordpub.com/news/sports_article/5179918.

Profile of Plitzuweitm is at:

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-baskbl/m...awn00.html

But I'm quite happy with what we have, though, as Burden says, we won't know for a couple of years.

RE: Kent Womens Basketball's
Your right we don't have the speed to play a 94 foot game as of now. I actually hope we don't go in that direction. That style gets you NIT bids, 2nd and 3rd place finishes and a very tired team at the end of the year. Up tempo offense and solid half court defense gets you the championships.

Of course whatever you play has to fit your talent so what we see next year might not be how the new coach wants to play in the future.[/b]

If it's O'Banion, then "Congrats to Her and Kent State". This was a painful process for all involved and I am glad it didn't drag out. She certainly sounds and reads like a wonderful get! Let's remember that right now we don't have the type of players we need to compete in her system so there will be some growing pains. Hopefully, she can attract a few looks. I wonder what our recent "transfer" Anita Brown is thinking about now.....if she has read the bio, etc.
