Villanova entry fee to move up to the BE waived in the brokered Temple deal
Quote:The Owls will now share Big East turf in Philadelphia with Villanova.
The Wildcats and Owls traditionally play each other every season as part of the Big 5 series with Penn, La Salle and Saint Joseph's. The Owls, under Fran Dunphy, won this season as Villanova slumped badly.
To ease any concerns from the Wildcats about the move, the Big East will offer financial assistance to Villanova as it explores moving its football program from FCS to FBS. The conference will waive the entry fee if the school meets requirements and is admitted as a football-playing member within the next three years.
"It's critical that the conference and both universities succeed in Philadelphia," said Villanova's president, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue. "Even as my loyalty and obligation is to Villanova, we recognized early on that we could achieve this win-win-win, which ultimately we did."

So Nova to FBS and share the Linc w/ Temple? Sounds good to me.

RE: Villanova entry fee to move up to the BE waived in the brokered Temple deal
A few conclusions from the Nova report:
-Its pretty clear that the door is now wide open for Villanova to move up to FBS as the Big East is now secure with a minimum of 12 members for 2012-2013. Villanova is the most likely eastern based member to next join the football conference.
-For the first time today during the Temple press conference the BE leadership has expressed comfort with the idea of going to 14 which makes a lot of sense with the far flung divisions. Therefore the addition of Temple and Memphis before it shouldn't be viewed as a backup plan for Louisville leaving as much as a way to satisfy the basketball focused schools in the Big East.
-The Big East would really like to have BYU and/or Air Force in the football conference. The best way to get there might be to offer Fresno State FB-Only to let BYU/AFA know that the BE is taking the west seriously and not just sitting with Boise and SDSU. A second California school would be a nice touch for recruiting.
-If BYU or AFA are totally off the table for the BE (e.g. one has moved to the Big XII) then I would put UNLV in play. The Big East definitely needs to start turning the screws out west and get BYU and AFA to make a decision. Taking UNLV would kick the floor out from under the western division of the alliance and throw its status completely into doubt.

No UNLV. They aren't worth the trouble.

Don't you think their recruiting would improve in the BE?
BE membership would put them heads and shoulders above the Nevada's, the New Mexico's, the Colorado State's out west and should allow UNLV to at least be decent.

Being in the MWC w/ better regional rivals didn't help them vs Nevada that played in the lesser WAC. I really don't see any of these far flung conf affiliates(If UNLV became one) having players get excited about playing anyone other than BSU, SDSU. Even if it was Fresno that joined. We'd have our biggest crowds for BSU, and SDSU. Maybe SMU and Houston other than that I bet most of them would rather se us play Nevada, UNLV, SJSU, Colorado St., UTEP types because we have some history w/ them.

LOL. Its football only in the west. Nobody wants UNLV for thier football. When it comes to UNLV, its all about thier basketball. No---UNLV is not going to be in the Big East. Fresno has a winning tradition, a similar sized market, and they regualrly fill a 40K seat stadium. Fresno would be in line after AF and BYU.

I was thinking both Fresno and UNLV actually if it came to it.

I don't think 'Nova got the go-ahead at all today. Frankly, I think they were shoved aside with a little consulting money and a promise to help, IF the BE decides to invite them within 3 years. They obviously are not inviting them now.
With Temple coming is, that puts the BE at 12 for 2013, and 13 when Navy arrives. Martinatto says #14 is coming from the west, but expansion is on pause for now. IMO, that means they'll probably bring in somebody in the west for #14 around the time Navy joins. Unless somebody else leaves, and then the west team likely comes in earlier.

I think SJSU would get an invite before UNLV would.
I mean if we are going to go after really bad football with little to no fanbase.....you might as well go after the #6 market versus the #55 market.

We have #55, we have fans except for last year. Everyone knew the only way to get rid of Hill was don't show up, then the AD will have no other choice. Vegas has a little better market than us. UNLV at least has fans, the ones that aren't USC fans. SJSU is behind all 4 Pac-12 schools in CA in their own market. But yes UNLV & SJSU suck and will bring you markets but who will watch?

no way the eagles let nova and temple fully share the linc, imo.
i also don't think nova is serious about moving up cause i don't believe they think they can sustain it, i just think that this is mainly a PR move

RE: Villanova entry fee to move up to the BE waived in the brokered Temple deal
Villanova brokered a public relations ploy in an attempt to soothe their angry fanbase that wanted to keep Temple out of the Big East. The Eagles control the Linc, barely tolerate Temple, and will not let Villanova play home games there under any circumstances. Maybe if the Big East agrees to play in the soccer stadium, Villanova might have a chance, but their fan base will never be big enough to support FBS football.
I am quite confident that Villanova will commission another study, sit on their hands, and let the three-year window pass without moving up. The next East Coast school in line for the Big East, if Louisville joins the Big 12 anytime soon, is UMass. It makes too much sense. As for the West, UNLV has been one of the worst programs in Division I for more than 25 years. Fans who mention them joining in football are insane.
The Big East is going to make another run at getting either Air Force or BYU to join as the football-only 14th member in the West. If those efforts fail, Fresno State will be the top target, as another California team makes infinitely more sense than anyone in the desert or mountains. Population, markets, and recruiting are among the main keys as realignment continues to change the FBS landscape. Not UNLV basketball.

UNLV was good at football.............in the mid 80's when they had Randle Cunningham and Icky Woods.

RE: Villanova entry fee to move up to the BE waived in the brokered Temple deal
Stupid question but I'm just curious, why would Villanova have to pay to play a sport in a conference that they are already in other sports? Did the new members(UCF, Houston, etc.) have to pay a fee as well or do they just get in for free?

Another thing. If the BE went to 16 and got AFA to join along w/ Fresno, would UTEP be a better option over Colorado St.? AFA and CSU are around the same distance from Denver, I just wonder if the BE would rather hit a different market to spread the wealth.
wildthing, I was thinking that too. Did UConn have to pay to move up to their own conf.?

Nevada has a sucky small erector set field w/ retractable stands that go over the track and they have a small market. Otherwise they are the best western candidate.
