RE: Question about replacing Temple
(03-08-2012 10:08 PM)huskiebob Wrote:  I'm trying to figure out how Buffalo is a "larger football playing program" than Syracuse in the state of New York. Or, how JMU & ODU could be the "#2 and #3 largest football playing programs" in the state of Virginia. They're bigger than either UVa or VaTech? I don't think so. lol

Enrollment size folks not attendance and if you don't believe me, here's my proof from http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstList.aspx
Listing of undergrad enrollment for all VA public universities

Institution City State Undergraduate Enrollment
The University of Virginia's College at Wise Wise VA 1,550
Virginia Military Institute Lexington VA 1,569
University of Mary Washington Fredericksburg VA 3,812
Longwood University Farmville VA 3,853
Christopher Newport University Newport News VA 4,634
Virginia State University Petersburg VA 4,732
Norfolk State University Norfolk VA 4,977
College of William and Mary Williamsburg VA 5,835
Radford University Radford VA 7,614
University of Virginia-Main Campus Charlottesville VA 13,826
Old Dominion University Norfolk VA 14,345
George Mason University Fairfax VA 15,644
James Madison University Harrisonburg VA 16,803
Virginia Commonwealth University Richmond VA 19,219
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg VA 23,184

VCU is larger than either but doesn't play football making JMU #2, George Mason is larger than ODU but doesn't play football therefore ODU is #3. Both have enrollments larger than UVA.

RE: Question about replacing Temple
Then we should get the University of Phoenix and their national alumni base.

Quote:University of Phoenix, Online Campus, 380,232

They have a beautiful online stadium and have plans in the works for a virtual IPF second to none.

RE: Question about replacing Temple
Getting 2 large public universities in a state that unlike PA, OH & MI is actually growing in population and has a large talent base in mulitple sports (football, baseball, lacrosse, basketball) is reason enough to invite them. Plus the fact that ODU leads FCS in attendance and drew more than any MAC program last year.

Replace Temple with NOBODY and the same with UMass. Go back to 12 all sports schools.

RE: Question about replacing Temple
All these numbers are irrelevant. The only thing that matters is the quality of the football program and the institutional commitment to it. If a school has that, and is a reasonable fit academically, it matters nothing if the enrollment is 9500 (TCU) or 15,000 (Suny-SB), or Ill.St. U (20,000).

I would be interested in the number of season ticket holders they have.

You would have to figure that a portion of their attendance is due to having 6 teams in the same conference with a 2.5hr MAX drive. It is much easier for the opponents fans to travel that distance.

ODU does not lead the FCS in attendance. App St does...they get 30k+ per game.

JMU is next at round 25k....ODU draws around 20K

Our stadium will go to 40k within the next 5 years. Just need a 1-A home.

I think so....but what do I know? If we can get ODU/UD to come along, it would be a no brainer.

You nailed it. Who the hell cares what their enrollment is?

Another example - TSISB had an undergraduate enrollment of 8437 for 2010-2011. But they get 80,000 for every home game. Enrollment means NOTHING if the football program is not supported by the school and the fans.

JMU 2004: Just as an FYI if you were to join the MAC the home team and visitors sidelines would have to switch. In the MAC you can not have any part of the home student section behind the visitors bench.

Nice looking stadium. Gonna need some night lights though. If you joined the MAC, they would be a requirement if you want to play the night games on our tv contract.

just an observation...you basically gave the middle finger to the opposing fan section when it was built :)

Ask Joe Novak if the MAC enforces that rule. When we played at Miami in 2006, their students were right behind the NIU bench.

The stadium has lighting designed to meet ESPN HD requirements.

Thats the old section...built in 1976. It will be replaced if we move up.

Interesting about the student section in the MAC. Not sure how we could make that work right now.

While FB is the primary component the MAC needs to add good BB schools too. If we had decent hoops UMass and Temple might have been compelled by the MAC office to join as full members or nothing.

I guess the question is if all three of you come over in all sports would that interest UMASS for joining in all sports?

ODU, JMU, UD, UMASS, Buffalo, Akron, Kent St, Ohio
NIU, BSU, WMU, CMU, EMU, Toledo, BGSU, Miami

This would increase the MAC footprint in states, it could raise the MAC attendance average in football and make the MAC a better basketball league while limiting cross divisional travel in football to every other year.

For those worried about these FCS teams leaving the MAC we should just make the exit fee 2.5mil for every team with 2 seasons notice and a set fee for leaving with 1 seasons notice (7.5mil) or 0 seasons notice (10mil).

Ah, I didn't see those bad boys. I was too focussed on imagining myself sitting in the visiting bleachers while looking at a two tiered stadium staring at me. No doubt the home side has nice concession stands and restrooms...while the visitors are left with the stale popcorn table and cotton candy...and probably a port-o-potty.
