We decided since we could not beat West at Memphis or UAB we better hire him so he couldn't beat us any more.

No thanks, it has Memphis on it. Give it to O. C. Brown, he loves Memphis.

All animosity aside, what was he suspended/released for?

The only thing released is "breaking team rules" I have heard rumors but have more respect for the young man than to put it on a message board unsubstantiated.

Unspecified violations of team rules was all I could find, but I read somewhere why he was kicked off (on a message board), but couldn't find anything official.

Rip got a raw deal. Our offense looked better than it had in years under Bower. I think Bower was feeling heat and his M.O. was to fire OC's. I had a friend who was Rip's next door neighbor. He was blindsided.

Rip is a great stand-up guy.

I never knew the whole story regarding his departure at USM. He's an NFL assistant making good money and not worrying about recruiting classes any longer.

Things have worked out pretty well for him.

C'mon man, where's the ambition. A little hard work and paint and it could be the greatest USM bobblehead ever.

Rip was a good guy and his daughter was hot. +2 to him.

West admitted it was a very different scenario when he took over as head coach at Memphis in 2001.

“The bar was really low,” he said. “It was ‘Man, if we could ever just go to a bowl game,’ because they hadn’t been to one in 30-something years.

“We go to five bowls in our last seven years and get fired. So we moved the bar.”

RE: Tommy West on being at Southern Miss.....
I thank West for bringing the Tigers to bowl games and I wish him well. However, it annoys me that he used lack of football resources as an excuse for underperformance. He had about the same resources toward the end of his tenure as he did when he won and he was earning a high salary compared to his CUSA peers. If he did not think he could win with the funding situation, then he should have turned down the raise and looked elsewhere for employment rather than leading fans to believe his leadership would result in victories.

Our D sucked both before and after West, so I'm not sure what you expected to learn from his year on the Southside.

I"ll say this: He sure was loud.

I was hoping UAB fans expected results on the field...I guess not.
