La Salle senior linebacker Joe Burger plans to visit UC Friday, according to Lancers coach Tom Grippa.

Burger, an Enquirer Division I all-area selection this past season, was first-team all-state and first-team all-district. He has been considering preferred walk-on opportunities at UC, Ohio State and Notre Dame, Grippa has said.

Burger was the GCL South linebacker of the year this past season. He led the Lancers with 103 tackles (60 solo), eight tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, one interception and five sacks.

For anyone who has seen him play, is there a reason why he only had scholarship offers from a few MAC schools? Do you think he has a shot to become a starter at the BCS level? Especially considering we've really begun to upgrade talent at the LB position.

JK had an offer from Miami and maybe another MAC school? That was it, then UC took a chance. The Elder walk on, Hyland, has moved up the depth chart pretty fast. Don't know what kind of an athlete Burger is but if he close to JK in this regard then give him an offer. If you take a chance with a marginal offer do it with LaSalle, Elder, Colerain kids.

My guess is Norte dame for burger. Is the burger the from lasalle his brother?....and didn't his dad play there? Uc's only real shot to me would be a full ride....and I'm not sure he needs that. Call me pessimistic, but I see nd 1, OSU 2, UC 3.

As long as the parents have $$$ then ND would probably be #1 walk on choice.

You think a preferred walk-on is going to get a chance to play at ND or OSU before he can at UC?

I think he will end up at UC because of the better chance to see the field sooner. He will be lost at ND and OSU with what they got coming in.

You would think, but funny how all these kids think otherwise and would rather sit the bench at a school like ND or O$U then sit the bench at UC, even though they have a much better chance of seeing the field at UC.

Man, signing day seems so long ago. 30 total signees. EJ Junior, Zach Edwards and Frank Bruscianelli are preferred walk-ons, seven scholarships were backdated, so we should have four available? (30-3-7=20)? That doesn't seem right...

It has been awhile since we've discussed this, but I don't believe all 7 EEs were available to count against last year's total. Maybe only 4 or 5. Also not sure where we stand against the 85 man limit. Junior and Edwards were grey shirts so I thought if we had room we might try to go ahead and give one or both scholarships for 2012. Lots of moving parts here.

Has anyone been able to confirm whether Carroll Phillips is in fact enrolled and with the team? If so, that's another consideration.

Actually, we had 9 EE which is why i thought the number was seven. i knew all of them didn't count but i thought it was higher than 4-5. All that said, it is hard to do the math without complete info.

You are right! For some reason, I was thinking two less than the number of guys we brought in could be counted against 2012 and when I saw the 7 for some reason I was thinking only 5 could count.

Dad played at Notre Dame, brother Bob played at Dayton, then transferred to Notre Dame. Their other brother Chris is a scratch golfer, phenominal family
