The main reason to go to the tournaments
other than the NCAA is to give your young kids more experience for the next season. However, I would not be in favor of going this year for one reason. Both Will and Taggart will have surgery, and they need time to heal. Chucky has had plenty of experience and Dre and Courtney will be gone. Next year's team will have at least one freshman starting, and they're not here yet. So that's why I think we're better off not going to a minor tournament. Obviously the NCAA is important, and the NIT has some prestige, and some years I might think we should go to one of the others, but not this year.

I respectfully disagree with both of you for the following reasons:
1) Playing in one of these tournaments would not significantly delay any surgeries that might be in the off season for either player. This isn't like the NBA Playoffs. Were talking about a week or two.
2) Do you really think that Coach Shields and his staff are going to be doing a lot of support work for the Womens NCAA games? Really? Somehow I don't think so.

I agree. We have a shot at the NCAA by means of winning the SBC. We do not have a chance at the NIT. The record and RPI are not in our favor. Do not go to one of the other tourneys. The quicker we get healed, the better off we are for next year. The thing I hate is this is a summer Olympic year and Will N. will miss out on that because of surgery. Even if he goes to U.K. camp, with his injury I doubt he would make the team, but what an experience he will miss. We have the core for a really good team next year, let's get ready for that.

I think we are a long shot for the CIT (they now take 24 teams). Still it's insane for a program like us to turn down postseason if we get an offer. I'd like to be able to tell recruits "we've been to postseason the last 2 years in a row". Most don't now the difference between the NIT or CIT anyway. I'd like to think we turned it down last time because we were pissed we didn't go to the NIT and will look at it differently now. How do we have the nerve to snub our noses at tournaments that teams from most BCS conference are fine with going to, and excellent midmajor conferences like the MoValley and A-10 jump at when they are offered. Hey, it will be useless argument if we win the tournament or if we don't get to the final.
I honestly don't understand folks who are against this. I didn't see Razorback fans saying turn down the Weedeater Bowl in Shreveport or the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. Those bowls are exactly the equivalent of these tournaments. Most football teams are lucky to break even when they go to a minor bowl, but they almost never turn them down.

To support PTJR's point, adding a week or, at most, 2 to the season isn't going to set back anybody's surgery. My guess is they'll have it during spring break which is a little over 2 weeks away.

Shield's and his staff are not support staff. Support staff is support staff. That staff supports two teams. That came from a good source.
Now, i want to play.

Last time we didn't go, part of the reason seemed to be that we bid to have the WNIT here. Money and support staff went into that. Not sure what support staff do when we go on the road. Are the women going to turn down their guaranteed WNIT bid if they lose in the tourney?

I have not been on that many road trips with the Trojans, and certainly would not be that familiar with who all they take with them. But, I am extremely familiar with who goes on road trips with the Richmond Spiders. In addition to the players and coaching staff, there is an academic guy, trainer, student managers, video guy, and broadcast crew. None of these people would be working an event at home at the Robins Center for the women even if they were in town.
So unless UALR's administration plans on Coach Kline keeping stats, or the trainers selling cokes, or Ray Tucker scanning tickets at the front door, I don't know what the men going on the road would have to do with the Women's NCAA at home. Now money, sure. If we have to pay to play in a road game in the CIT, then I understand. We may be thin in that area with putting on the NCAA event. But otherwise, saying it's support staff just doesn't wash.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure road teams don't have to pay anything to play in the CIT or CBI. Now who covers travel expenses, I don't have a clue. I would think you would get some help with those or very few teams would agree to play.

RE: The main reason to go to the tournaments
For an idea of what it takes to be the host of an NCAA regional, take the normal number of support staff needed for a regular season game and add about 300 to it.
Will's surgery will not be put off any longer than it needs to be. As soon as the season is over he will have surgery. Remember, Will had surgery on his other shoulder as soon as the injury occurred. He rehabbed it all summer and he needed the redshirt year. The basketball he played on the U.K. team last summer was the first game time he had seen in more than a year. I am hopeful Will will be ready to go in time for the season opener next year.
