Should the University take any action?
http://www.ksbw.com/news/central-califor...index.html

Quote:University of California at Santa Cruz students and professors are trying to shut down their campus in what's part of a massive protest to education cuts and tuition hikes.

I'm of the opinion that if a staff member is interfering with the normal daily activities of the University, then they should be fired.

What do you think?

We live in a time were even the poorest student afford flat-screen televisions, ipods, smartphones, a car, plenty of food, and a closetful of clothes. But it's those damn pesky tuition payments that are the straw that broke their yellow centipede's back?

I say it is their bed, let them lay in it. If it is more important for them to protest than attend class, well I imagine the end result of that will mean they fail classes, or have to pay for additional semesters of schooling to make up what they missed.

Hi nose! This is the face talking yada yada yada.

Won't the tuition $$ be wasted if you can't go to class............and I just read the article,
""However, we take issue with a protest that simultaneously denies students access to those classes for which they have paid," Blumenthal said."

Silly students. Why are protestors, especially college activists always the ugly students? Every now and then you see a decent looking girl, but
generally it is the ugly crowd?

Of course. If you are physically blocking a paying customer from freely entering and associating, then action should be taken against you.

I agree. And I'm sick of people demanding handouts.

A college education is not a right.

In many cases it's a waste.

I think what is more disturbing are some of the responses to the article that I linked above...

Quote:weak... I would laugh at these students... look at this, sheltering from the rain under a yellow banana... you should be burning it... what happens when the pepper spay comes out? Will you run to your dorm and take a hot shower and then run to the cafeteria for some comfort food? Public education is yours, why are you begging for something that's yours.. take it back by force. The revolutionary spirit of colleges and universities in the united states is so weak. Spineless, I guess they are banana slugs.

Quote:Where were these protesters when the U.S. invaded Iraq? Why didn't they attend Joe Wilson's appearance on campus? (No draft, no problem?) Tuition hikes are hitting them in a highly personal way, so now we see protests taking place. I'm glad these students have learned how to let go of apathy.

Because it's the ugly ones who aren't getting any, and therefore are the angry ones?

Are you kidding? The university probably instigated this. The university is the one losing the money through state and federal budget cuts.

RE: Should the University take any action?
I applaud the quick-thinking professors that found places off-campus to teach classes. Students pay >$200/day for their education and it is completely inappropriate to attempt to deprive students of their educations for political gain.

Why weren't the police involved in breaking this up? If instead of standing in the middle of the street, they hosted a kegger on the sidewalk, I am nearly positive that it would have been broken up within minutes (even if everyone was of age). Instead, the police stated that people should 'expect major delays' but the article did not indicate that they took any action.

I have to admit that I used to think that the rules on large gatherings were oppressive (you have to file a security plan, have so many paramedics on standby, pay overtime for police, etc.). But situations like these underscore the need for someone with a security/safety background to review and approve plans. One punch was thrown and a car was driven through four people. We have literally thousands of case studies for how to prevent these things from happening, but all of that knowledge is for naught if nobody who is trained in such matters has a chance to influence the gathering.

Things can't be too bad if they can afford to give illegals the lower in-state rates.
