several key bowl people, who run big pay out bowl games, have become very nervious about the makeup of the new Big East. they are now putting pressure to add teams that travel well spend money in bowl cities, and buy there full allotments of bowl tickets, ergo ECU, Memphis. seems that BE schools that have filled these bowl births have been slack in these areas, poor fan turn outs, low ticket sales etc.these bowl people have quietly warned the BE, these bowls have big pay outs and will dump the BE, in favor of other conference affiliations if the BE fails to add schools like ECU that travel spend $$$$$$$$$$ and put fannys in seats at these bowl games. look for the BE to add ECU and other schools or face loseing these bowl games.....this is a big deal.....also the impending mandate of the 12 game season will force the BE to add schools 04-cheers

We only have one bowl outside of the BCS that has a payout above the minimum 750k, the Gator Bowl.

They have stated that contract renewal with the Big East depends primarily on access to Notre Dame (in local WV paper recently). Probably meaning if the league wants to keep the tie in, the GB will have access to Notre Dame 4 outta 4 years instead of the current set up in which they can only get Notre Dame 2 outta 4 years.

I'm guessing the part about bowl people wanting teams that travel and being satisfied with East Carolina is more opinion or assumption then actual fact. I really don't think the future of the Big East will depend on adding East Carolina. And I don't think that bowls said "add East Carolina and Memphis or lose your bowls", even though I would love to add a Memphis, just because of their all-around strong athletic program, strong media and fan base.

There is only one problem...

You rarely make it to a bowl! And when you do your .500 at best!

true ECU is down. but we will be back and soon. we have a new skipper. when we do go to bowls we take lots of fans that spend $$$$$$$$$$. this in more then a rumor. the BE will add schools that have fan support, or lose bowl births. schools will be added as early as Feb, when the 12 game season is mandated. you will see 04-cheers

These Pirate fans are a joke. ECU might have trouble getting into the sun belt right now if it weren't already in CUSA.

I guess when youve been an independent for 20 plus years in your history and your not named Notre Dame the bowls arent going to come consistently even when you might deserve one. I can think of two years in particular when we were indy that i felt like we should have gone to a bowl game. We were the only independent other than ND to have our own Television contract. We have had plenty of great teams in the 80's and 90s that should have gone to bowls but didnt. At least we have been to bowl games unlike another school you added.

A school that has existed in 1A football for less than a decade? That's not a reasonable comparison.

Holy Lord. Adding ECU right now to an embattled Big East would be possibly the dumbest move in sports history passing the Blazers of the NBA selecting Sam Bowie over Jordan himself.

adding a school with no history, hoping it will succeed, and just because of the market would have take the cake. At least we have history.

I don't get you guys. What are you trying to defend... or attack for that matter? ECUs athletic programs are in shambles from the leadership of the university on down, greenville is in the middle of nowhere Carolina and ECU is probably the 5th choice of fans in the region!

One request when you respond to this, please don't mention baseball. Its as meaningless as squash.

Hmm... I know of a certain bowl, with a ~$1.3 million payout, that has a certain connection to a certain school... 03-wink

If ECU would leave CUSA would that mean that the the departing teams could then retain their NCAA units since the majority of the teams would be departing and the conference effectively disbanded?
