Temple/UMass- MAC
Just a thought- but doesn't UMass's contract with the MAC stipulate that if Temple left before they were a member, the MAC could void their membership?

UMass would be really on an island there. Only FBS team close there would be Buffalo.

Yeah, but if the Alliance lands a decent tv contract that would more than make up for the travel costs. The exposure of the Alliance would be greater then that of the MAC too. UMass really doesn't fit culturally into the MAC it would just have been a union of convenience. I could easily see UMass go with the Alliance over the MAC if the dollars make sense.

But how excited will UMass be to play vs say Tulsa(no offense meant). Or Rice. Or Tulane.

Also- could ESPN suggest to the MAC to keep UMass and they'd up the payment a bit to keep Umass put?

How excited will New Englanders be to see UMass play michigan, ohio and illinois teams? The concept is the same but with the Alliance atleast those fans will see how UMass stacks up against the country and not just one small section of the country.

It's a whole lot closer though for UMass to play the MAC....

Also- keep in mind the basketball. UMass in the MAC continues to be in the A10. HUGE local difference there.

I understand it is closer. I even spoke to that. What I am saying is that if the money is greater in the Alliance to the point that the travel distance doesn't matter so much then the closeness isnt a deciding factor.

Now if we are talking about fans travelling to away games, I wasn't aware UMass had a large following. If the Alliance lands a solid tv contract then those fans can watch the away games on the tube and watch the home games at home. Its not like New Englanders are hip to the idea of driving to Ohio, Michigan and Illinois for UMass games when most of them prefer watching Patriot games. UMass is going to have to build up it's following in that regard and the more coverage they can get on the tv, the more of a following they will be able to build up.

The A10 issue is a stickler, in attempting to be devil's advocate against that good point, the best I can come up with is that the Alliance has released talking points about future expansion and the possibility of football only schools. In that case UMass could get in opposite of an addition in the West.

I think UMass would be football only at best....

And- if UMass got "kicked out" of MAC before they started- CUSA may have to take them in this year if they want them for the alliance....

I can't imagine UMass is worth a FB only invite. My guess is the 2 teams mentioned as possible eastern FB only considerations were Temple and Army. If you can't get either of those just take an F_U and move on till the good eastern FCS teams are ready.

Buffalo is now UMass's best friend in the MAC...

That said I would not be suprised if UMass shows promise- that the Big East would add them when they go to 16.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of when the Alliance tries to expand to 24 or even further as such was alluded to. When that happens there may be a western program that the alliance wants but is only willing to join in football. Then a program like UMass provides an addition in the east that is more valuable as an addition in conjunction with that western program then it is by itself.

Perhaps though the best move for UMass is to just go ahead with the MAC and seek entry into the Big East at some point.

I can't think of any western program that would be looking for a FB only membership, or one that we'd be willing to offer it to. I can think of plenty of non-FB members worth adding, but unless BYU was willing to listen (and I am certain they aren't) there isn't a single other FB only team out west worth adding.

RE: Temple/UMass- MAC
UMass fans at this point are excited to be playing Akron, nevermind better FBS teams. The opponents aren't the issue.
Thanks to the supreme idiocy and mutual backstabbing of northeast universities, we'll be on an island anywhere we go. Even the Big East only has 2 teams in close proximity to us. 3 if they add Temple.

One thing we have going for us is that, as an A10 member, having football-only membership anywhere is no problem for us. We could probably even get by in the WAC football-only if we had to. If MWC/CUSA wants a 2nd football-only to counterbalance Hawaii and keep the non-football sports at an even number, we'd be best positioned to oblige. Or we could sit tight in the MAC and wait for them to add a 14th member, provided they don't terminate our deal.

I understand the concern about inviting recent FCS call-ups, but do you think the Big East regrets inviting UConn straight from FCS? It's incredibly frustrating to sit here and watch FBS football blow itself up from the moment UMass announced its FBS move. At this point I expect the BCS to secede from FBS and the NCAA to cancel football entirely before we get a chance to play our first FBS game in 6 months. It'd be nice to get an opportunity to show what we can do first. Our only competition in this state (the 14th most populous in the nation) is a small Catholic university that apparently no longer cares about sports other than hockey. So if the entire universe could just slow down a damn second with the realigning, that would be much appreciated.

Interesting. Just for the heck of it, what if UMass was invited in Temple's place to join the Alliance for 2013? What would the hurdles be to exit the MAC? That would mean, if UMass agreed to come into the Alliance in 2013, they would be playing their 1st and last season in the MAC in 2012. Very uncomfortable I would think.

Don't see the BE going to 16 football teams. UMass needs a couple of years in the MAC to recruit and grow at the D1 level. The MAC will replace Temple for 14 teams if Temple is leaving and will probably try to locate another east coast team to fit in with UMass and Buffalo to get some TV time and news print publicity in the NE. In the mean time UMass will be fine with Temple in the BE. As a D1 team they will play 8 MAC games with one of them against Buffalo in their backyard, a D1AA NE school that is close to home, still play Temple OOC, and be able to get games with other NE BCS schools such as UConn, BC, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt, Army, and Navy OOC. UMass will be fine in the MAC with their BB and other sports in the A-10 for years to come.

If Temple leaves, the exit fee for UMass drops to $500k. The MAC does not want 13 members, and any new addition from FCS ranks would take 2+ years to transition, so the MAC might even consider UMass leaving a mutually agreeable separation. The main thing for UMass is, we don't want to wake up one morning and find out we've involuntarily become an independent. So if the Alliance offered us that assurance and the MAC didn't, it's a very easy decision.

All-sports is obviously a much more complicated discussion.

The WAC for football is interesting. If the WAC is looking for eastern schools to survive, UMass would be a great place to start.

I understand the basketball issues. How will UMass view the A-10 without Temple? If the Alliance continues it's goal of eventually having four 6 team divisions that are as regional as possible, would that be enticing enough to get UMass all sports? Obviously if the Alliance wants to put together an eastern division starting with ECU, Marshall, UMass then the other 3 eastern members become difficult to identify. ODU, Buffalo, Toledo? Just guesses on my part.
